Those are a different case, and I usually think of them more as side-modes or minigames rather than sidequests. In the case of Yakuza, it's not because of the super varied and engaging gameplay that people love Substories. It's because of the absurd scenarios and bizarre tone shifts. Ghost of Tsushima and Nier are other examples. The gameplay within them isn't necessarily that interesting or different from the main formula of the game, but the stories told through them are.

this isnt a sidequest and more of an epilogue, but Lunar 2's epilogue is some of the most fun I've ever had in a video game

You think people immediately answered Blitzball and Triple Triad for the narrative rather than the gameplay?
Blitzball absolutely. It was the coolest shit ever back in the 2000s. The gameplay itself was boring garbage that most people didn't even learn to play at a basic level, so it's definitely not that.

I would assume most people who dislike Blitzball gameplay don't do the side quest, but maybe I'm wrong there.

The reward is great, so not sure.

But I also find Blitzball to be the most overrated thing in FF, and it isn't even that liked.

Blitzball is cool but I've always felt like most of its detractors hate it because they don't turn on manual control and/or lost the story tournament.

The story Blitzball match is annoying. The opponents are big jerks to you so you want to win, but you're at enough of a disadvantage to have to rely on RNG, and it takes more work than it should to retry if you lose.

As long as you don't mess up the prompt to learn the Jecht Shot, all you need to do is get Tidus to level up in the first half, and the Jecht Shot is an instant goal in the second half.

It's basically designed to be a terrible experience, especially since they dump SO much info and stats on you all at once, so you feel like you actually have a chance, but you absolutely don't unless you switch to manual and know all the quirks AND even in that case, you need Jecht Shot to really win consistently. If they just threw you into the match quickly and made you lose quickly, it would've still had the narrative effect of being an underdog, but without the sour experience.

Does the game even tell you that you can switch to manual? I had to find that out from the internet. Also the Jecht Shot is extremely easy to miss, and hiding the mode's most important ability behind a one-off QTE in the middle of an unskippable cutscene is ludicrous. Blitzball basically makes the worst first impression it possibly could.

You also don't know what you're doing at the time because it's the first game of Blitzball you've ever played.

If you take the time to watch every single aspect of the lengthy tutorial, it does mention you can switch to manual control.

Add Chocobo Hot & Cold for another one that's fun for the gameplay.

Just seeing the word blitzball makes me want to start a new league

I remember my first playthrough I read that you could switch to manual, but I had no idea how to actually do it in the game. I thought I was on manual since I could choose my character's breaking actions, but only later did I find the triangle menu and was so pissed.

Also Jecht Shot is weak but you can very reliably rush the goal and initiate a break encounter with just 2 defenders 90% of the time. The other 10% it's just 3, which only requires small RNG to score. This also requires you to know the secret button that forces an encounter. So overall the strategy requires you to know 3 secrets to win that first match.

I can't say I don't find that charming, after replaying the game like 8x. But it's reallyyyy bad for the first playthrough.

I've won that first game without jecht shot before, though it's much harder.

I think I have too but it was by getting 1 lucky goal with Sphere Shot and then running behind my goal to bleed out the clock

It's the inability to do anything when the opposition has the ball.

Which stops being a problem real fast too as it gets to easy but that isn't exactly a fix.

I loved Blitzball from the beginning without even having Jecht's Shot, but this is fair and I always hated this choice from a design perspective.

I think the way MM's quests are structured is a really cool concept, but yeah, I only really remember a couple of them.
