They are so different, they just keep what basically are easter eggs like calling fire spells fira, firaga etc and keeping a few constants like chocobos, summons, monsters etc. They just make what ever the fuck games they want and then capitalise on the final fantasy name. I can't think of another series that does this. Even persona seems to set in the same universe.
