Wow I didn't realise how tight his finals losses were. Silly that he lost to Year 1 Balthier.

And now he's lost to Year [whatever this one is] Balthier too

I mean, Balthier > Zidane generally speaking, and depending on the time of year that contest was run could see recency bias being a big thing.

Like imagine if XVI came out in April or early May, the heat for certain characters would be outrageous. By next May, maybe not as much... though ideally the recency bias still holds for R E B I R T H BOOST

need to commission the following artwork: pile of FF9 character corpses with Eiko triumphantly standing on top (and angelic Mog looking down from above, approvingly)

what the hell I just googled "Eiko FF9" to see what's out there and came across this??

That stretch in the FFD-Leonhart era is so impressive though, only one top 10 finish but 3rd best stats across those contests next to Squall and Lightning (constant top 10s each). And all that after his championship, he didn't have the post-winning hangover until many years later... is there any winner who had so much consistent success for 5+ years after winning like that? anyone other than Cecil, at least?

Leon and PJ: Thanks for saving Cindy. I was too busy to get my third save.

I don't expect Cindy to last that much longer but I will do what I can. Right now I am just trying to save my favorite Final Fantasy characters.

My own priorities, in order: Tifa, Aerith, Cindy, Barret, Rikku, Jessie, Cloud

I am starting to get an itch to replay FF7R. Or maybe the original. My current time-travel meter is set to around 2001-02, so... maybe I finally get around to FFIX.

Cecil and Kuja benefitting from the olden days, I see sub-81% scores in those top 20s, so Zidane is the true immediate-post-victory-success champ!

Somewhere in the infinite multiverse, there is a B8 where today's result was the first step on the multi-generational road of softbooting and renominating Zidane to get him to last place in the stats. Somewhere!!

If she survives 5 more days she'll have achieved her all-time best placement, if not then it's at least her 2nd best run. She's out in boots w/o you so you've definitely done your part! (just checked and you had 22/90 saves for clear #1 Cindy saver through first 50 days, including half of FoG saves)

I also have a 7R replay sometime in the near future, Intergrade + Intermission now that I have a PS5... gonna be good!

I don't agree with this at all. It only takes one bad round to be eliminated-- 90 chances to do that instead of 30 is huge difference

I'll agree with this as well. With a larger field, you have a TON of options out there that someone might support, and suddenly a popular and largely unhated character (eg. Auron) is not a priority because everyone has someone higher on their list than him.

I'm just saying...it's a lot easier to do when the field is smaller. Especially in the early Raytan years, because IIRC, he flooded the field with a bunch of no-names because he had a rule where once a character got booted, they just didn't get to come back. And that went on for a LONG time, so you had certain characters that might be strong nowadays that never got a second chance. So you wind up with a more consistent group of strong upper-midcarders and main eventers.

Making the top 20 is hard because it's extremely difficult to "fluke" your way through a bunch of rounds just getting random saves at the end or whatever, especially as the number of required saves goes up. Not sure why we're trying to diminish accomplishments or trying to downplay eliminations of traditional powerhouses here.
