Left side is a guaranteed loss. The opponents are programed to always try to bump into you whenever you get too close to them. Iirc, if you don't upgrade your sword to the razor sword on the first day though, then you can't do the second upgrade with the gold dust. So if it's the second day already and you win the race with the kokiri sword, it's a waste and you'll hafta do it again.
