Attending a high school reunion

Somebody I went to school with was trying to convince me to go to one this year as its 20 years since we left.

She didnt understand that I wasnt going to travel 6,000 miles to go to an event I have literally no interest in even going to. She made out that I was being unreasonable, and pointed out that a person who has gone to all of them (Ive never bothered with any) was coming all the way from Birmingham (about a hundred miles) as if it was remotely the same thing.

I don't think it's a realistic phenomenon anymore. There may have been a time when everyone was still poisoned from all the leaded fuel, and the dumbest and strongest used aggression to dominate, but couldn't make it in the real world. Most people that are popular in high school nowadays continue to be ahead of the bell curve of success after graduation. Athletes are held to at least some academic standards, and people with connections get into better schools and better jobs. They remain at the top for a pretty long time afterwards.

Nowadays, the typical person that "peaked" in high school is someone that was an outcast then and only further declined afterwards. Bullied and excluded, poor grades reflecting poor mental health. But at least when they were crammed in with hundreds of kids their own age, they had a group of friends they could relate to. But as adults they drift apart. They haven't developed their skills, and they've lost their support. Their life sadly only gets worse, so they "peaked in high school."

Of course, that's not typical even for the "losers." Most of them do have better luck in a new environment, and eventually catch up. But few will ever match the valedictorian/volleyball captain/student council treasurer, who's now the CFO of an international corporation.

I think the area matters a lot.

Most of the most popular kids in my year group very much fucked their lives up. Quite a few of them have been in and out of prison.

I generally enjoyed highschool, especially the second half. I go to all my 5yr-increment reunions (and those of my wife's high school, too). The popular kids have chilled out and are friendly. Most are less attractive with age. The middle-clique and dorks have chilled out and are more social. Most are more attractive with age. Most people are doing something interesting. The bullies have come out and/or "reformed" into dedicated and supportive parents. The food is great and there's free booze.

Ikr I romanticize the stuff I did outside of school more than the actual school like hanging out around the park and stuff like that tho I guess I have school to thank for meeting those people but that's it

Bruce Springsteen wrote a song about those people - Glory Days

"And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it, but I probably will

Yeah just sitting back trying to recapture a little of the glory of

Well but time slips away and leaves you with nothing mister but boring stories of...

Glory days"

Anyone who stops listening to new music, stops updating their wardrobe, thinks all the movies, TV shows, video games etc. were the best when they were in high school (etc.) are the ones who peaked.

EXAMPLE: You graduated in 1999 and your favorite band in 2023 is still Creed

I transferred from an awful local school to a boarding school in 11th grade and made a bunch of diverse friends I'm still in contact with. In my freshman year of college COVID hit and so student life was shut down until basically spring semester of junior year. From all that I never managed to make any lasting friends from my college. And now I just graduated. So I guess I peaked in high school

In fairness, its too early to tell for you because youre still really young. Most people on this board arent and I think we were mostly talking about people a similar age to ourselves.
