I wouldn't say they're "technically" not vegan. Not eating eggs is, like, the main thing if you're deciding between vegetarian vs vegan.

Yeah, I never got the whole "avoid eggs too" part, assuming the eggs come from the right birds (read: ones that are not factory farmed). Unless you just don't trust anything you can buy to be that. Or are just that adamant in trying to minimize a carbon footprint.

That would be a mix of tofu and some other things to make a ersatz egg. If it's for a binder they use yogurt or ground flax seed

Vegans/vegetarians make their own rules. The "why" they're doing it is what matters. Some will eat meat if it's hunted because they're just against farming. Some eat gelatin because it's too hard to avoid it like if it's in medicine.

There is. It's consuming eggs from a pet chicken or someone you know who doesn't slaughter or mass produce their chickens to lay eggs. Consuming eggs is fine until it comes from a factory farm.

Not even vegans agree on that which is why products like this exist in the first place. It's really the same stupid argument about whether honey is vegan or not, just applied to another animal.

Well, it certainly doesn't feel very morally right or fair to name a product including the word "Egg" and there be no eggs.

Sounds most unjust.

Yeah, I get what they were trying to say, but feel like it's a misleading fraud.

The more hardcore vegans dont believe that, but its still a grey area just like with honey. Youll get vegans that wont touch anything that came from an animal or bug. Then youve got vegans that are more laid back and if they want an egg they understand its not cruel in the slightest to consume an egg that came naturally from someones pet chicken. Its the act of forcing them, injecting hormones, or slaughtering the chicken that is the issue with eggs. Bees is about slavery with the bees and taking the wings off the queen to force her to pollinate that is the issue with honey. Its also not like that everywhere.

I don't think you'll find too many vegans who would agree with that stance. Even eating a pet chicken's eggs has its issues.

  1. If you bought the chicken you have likely given money to a hatchery that does all of the evil things a factory farm does and more. I guess you can get around this by adopting a rescue chicken from an animal sanctuary.
  2. Egg-laying chickens have a lot of health issues related to being bred to lay so many eggs. If you're doing what's best for your chicken you can get them implants to prevent them from laying eggs.
  3. If you can't get implants for your chicken you can feed the eggs back to the chicken in order to replenish the nutrients it lost.
Personally if I had a rescue chicken, couldn't give it implants, and for some reason couldn't feed its eggs back to it I'd probably just give them away to my non-vegan family members so they don't buy as many store-bought eggs.

It sounds odd, but I think it's that laying eggs is really nutritionally taxing for the hens. So stopping them from laying eggs means that they get to keep nutrients for themselves rather than for the eggs that they're laying. I've not looked into this, but I'm pretty sure that egg laying hens get really unwell from all of the egg laying.

It's a natural part of their ovarian cycle. A healthy hen will lay eggs regardless, usually only temporarily stopping for things like molting.

What health reason would cause someone to eat non-egg egg substitute?

Sugar substitutes are great for people trying to control their weight or diabetics for example, but are these egg substitutes mainly for vegan types, or do they drastically reduce cholesterol or something?
