more specific. it means you'd have a romantic relationship with any gender. some ppl might fuck more than one gender, but still want a hetero/homo partner.

Bi is you're attracted to people of both sexes, Pan is you're less concerned with looks and more attracted to personality, essentially

"pan" feels like a relic from the 2000s to me.

again this is literally not everyone's definition. It's fine calling yourself whatever you want but that's not what pan means to most people.

edit: id say the most common definition of "pan" is to foreground trans acceptance, which others, myself included, would argue is completely unnecessary, but also fine b/c u can do w/e u want.

I'm technically bi but I barely consider myself it because I've never even felt particular attraction towards any guys, I just think dicks are fun.

Bisexuals, or at least the ones I know and have dated, generally mean theyre attracted to both men and women. But does that include transgender men and women? What about people who are non-binary, does it include them too?

Pansexual, I would have assumed that the person could conceivably be attracted to someone regardless of their sex or gender, just based on my understanding of the prefix, but I openly confess my ignorance.

I guess for the practical purposes of online dating as your standard everyday cisgender straight guy the distinction probably doesnt matter, but Id be interested to learn.

I think it's also a bit shady to shit on someone's coming out because they got one line in an entire article not quite right, given how hard intersectionality is. And in his defense, it's really hard to describe the difference between bi and pan in 10 words or less, and he clearly didn't mean it as derogatory towards bi folks. I mean, what's your less than 10 word take on that difference? I'm not sure I even have one, and my partner is pan.

And given that he did go into a longer definition of how he understands his own pansexuality later in the article, I think some kindness is called for and we can let the one non-optimal sentence slide.

To my understanding, pansexuality is meant to cover a broader area - love without borders, dichotomies or binaries. Theoretically, it would mean that given an appropriate amount of interest from another person who they find attractive - whether they're male, female, non-binary, transgender, agender etc. - a pansexual person would be equally as interested regardless of their gender expression. It's not being slutty in the sense of "oh yeah I'll shag anything that moves", it's being an open book to a wider spectrum of people.

That being said, there's been a bit of a negative back-and-forth about bisexuality vs pansexuality - the former being seen as either redundant due to pansexuality or not being accepting of trans or non-binary people. But personally, I'm bi and I'm down with trans and non-binary people. I'm open to a wider degree of gender expression. I just prefer the label of "bisexual" because that's what I've been calling myself for years and I prefer the term.

There can be issues with intracommunity bigotry, look at how TERFs try to strictly define the term "lesbian" so that bisexual women or women who are open to dating trans women aren't "real" lesbians, as a part of an active campaign to attack and discredit trans women. But the whole bi vs pan thing comes from a similar faction who went after bi people in general as "hetero invaders" or people who would hurt queer people by leaving gay people for the opposite sex, on top of attacking asexual people, trans women, nonbinary people and who are currently going after trans men for "weakening" or "harming" the broader community or actively invalidating other queer identities for just existing. For as long as I've been aware of queer discourse, there's been some exclusionary horseshit trying to pit queer communities against each other.

At the end of the day, the difference between bisexuality and pansexuality isn't that wide because labels are fluid and depend on the person. Not every case of bisexuality is the same, and I'd imagine neither is every case of pansexuality; people are attracted to different people based on personal and arbitrary reasons that make sense only to them. Being bisexual doesn't lock you into a gender binary - some people move beyond the gender binary but prefer to go by bisexual.

Tldr yeah honestly shit is a mess sometimes, labels are fluid things and not everyone agrees on what they mean.

I really don't like that he said that either. It is harmful, but I don't think it was intentional. It was an ignorant comment for sure.

Someone should talk to him about it. Explain why what he said was wrong without making him out to be a monster or trying to shake his identity. Maybe if he understood he'd make an effort to undo any damage it caused.

Yeah I really can't think of any bi characters in media.

I always thought Willow from Buffy made more sense as a bi character.. but then it would have lessened the grand impact her character had as coming out gay.

Buffy made me realize a lot of vampires are portrayed as bi or at least sexually adventurous or whatever.. Eric from True Blood being the biggest one.
