I'm slightly worried there hasn't been nowhere near enough media coverage of this election coming up. That not enough people are aware that there was a election for this measure coming up in August. I didn't find out about this election until a week ago on a Brian Tyler Cohen video where mentioned what was at stake in Ohio.

This like many other recent elections will be a test to see if Liberals and Independents are still very much engaged in every election put forth in outright rejecting the modern GOP and what they currently stand for. With this one being abortions rights on the ballot. Please Ohioans, show up in full force Tuesday to reject this measure the Republican lawmakers in the state are desperately trying to pass. It will be incredibly harder to protect abortion rights if this gets passed.

I'm sure there will be at least a small percentage of Conservative women voting no on this measure which will help a lot in a state like Ohio which is fairly red Republican.

That's a good sign in Hamilton. Dem voters need to at least match that turnout level in all the blue counties. Better yet exceed turnout expectations. I'm feeling slightly more optimistic today.

Early voting is over 500k. That is huge.

I think dems are mobilized with a clear message. Anything abortion really charges up dems after Roe V Wade.

I think the fact that its essentially a proxy vote on abortion will hurt republicans ability to get "centrist" or right leaning independents voting yes as many either will be unaware of this or support abortion and won't vote/or vote no.

They might lose the small portion of GOP that legit cares about small government too. Doubt republican organizers like how hard it will be for them to do their own ballot initaives if this passes....

Ohio is red now but abortion is at ~57% support. We have a good shot here.

Polls close at 1930 hours EDT. I don't know how long historically Ohio takes to count ballots but my guess is 24-48 hours. Unless it's a blowout either way.

We'll see.

Honestly as someone in Ohio, this whole ballot is fucked on a few levels.

The fact that Republicans originally voted to get rid of all August special elections because they "were confusing" or otherwise dumb, only to force a special exception for this one so they can force this motion through.

The fact that not only does it make it so that special amendments like this would require 60%...it would require that for a citizen amendment to even reach the ballot, it would require 5% of the voters in each county to sign off on it. That means that in order for anything to get put on the ballot, the bum nowhere voters of at least 5% would have to sign off. And that's not taking into account the efforts necessary to get signatures in every county.

This issue would basically destroy the ability of Ohio citizens to adjust their constitution. The Republicans talking up how this is supposed to stop "outside interference" (when even the bill's sponsor outright said it was about abortion)

The problem is, I know my state. It might be slowly getting better, but we literally just voted in Hillbilly Elegy Hack into the Senate because Trump supported him. We are not a smart state.

They have been to an extent. Most of the commercials I've seen has been more focused on the fact that if this passes almost nothing will actually be possible to get on the ballot. The only time I saw abortion mentioned by Dems is when LaRoche was caught quite literally saying Issue 1 was about abortion. Or saying that if you don't for issue 1 your kids will become trans.

To simplify it, basically Republicans want to make it extremely hard for constitutional amendments proposed by citizens to get on the ballot and raise the threshold they pass.

This was done most likely to stop the constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion in the constitution as a right that's going on the ballot in November. As well as minimum wage increase.

They want to make it require 60% to pass instead of majority, and to even get on the ballot require signatures from every county vs the 44 (half) currently.

Basically Republican fascist bullshit to keep people from actually having a say

One promising thing I notice

On a fresh browser (to prevent historical bias either way) searching "issue 1 Ohio" is showing vast majority of articles favoring no

I have to add in 'yes on' to even see articles that explain why one should support it. Relatively unbiased outlets even have writing which slants toward why it's a bad idea

Normally, especially on major issues, searching the issue has both sides come up

Fox of course covers it with the spin of "Ohio is set to vote to protect their constitution from liberal manipulation"

Yeah good luck. This is the argument I just had with a Yes voter with mine in italics (long so I'm sorry):

Again, so a county of 14,000 people gets to restrict the rest of the states' right to vote? I don't think fair and reasonable means what you think it means.

Let's put out a silly hypothetical that smooth brains can understand. Little Johnny wants to have a guinea pig as his grades' class mascot instead of the gerbil they have now. Little Johnny's class has 88 students including himself. Little Johnny talks to some students and they totally want a new mascot while others are unsure as they like the gerbil. They are open to hearing about why they might want a new mascot though. He asks his teacher and his teacher says, "Well if you can get every single one of your classmates to come to an agreement that we should vote on a mascot, then we will have a vote."

But then there is Little Tommy. Little Tommy doesn't want the guinea pig as a mascot and doesn't want to take the chance that one might become the mascot. Why? Because he was told by his parents and every single one of his family members and the two closest neighbors he has about 29 minutes away, that guinea pigs were demons and the workers of Satan himself. This scares Little Tommy and he will never go along with a vote no matter how much information and logic is provided to him.

Because Little Tommy has had this irrational thought put into his head, the students don't get to decide for themselves who their own mascot is.

Little Tommy is that county. But only 5% you say?! In a rural county, you are counting on someone to canvas a very spread out population AND convince someone to sign something which is notoriously hard to do even if they support it. Fair and reasonable.

I get where you're coming from, but I think getting signatures from 88 counties instead of 44 is just much more representative.

But it's not. There isn't even an argument to be made where it is. What's representative is for each individual in those 88 counties to be able to vote on something and decide as a majority population whether something gets passed. But they don't even get to vote if there is nothing to vote on because one small population dictated that.

By voting yes, you just yelled out loudly that you were cool with having your rights and power as a voter stripped away.

You make some good points, but I'm just going to have to agree to disagree.

What the GOP voters fail to realize is that this works both ways. Republicans in Ohio could be in favor of, say, fully banning abortion, and with this new law a single blue county could stop them from getting that to a ballot

Republicans have a funny habit if constantly voting away their own rights
