Say I want X. One method of receiving X has 3 shots each at 18%. Another method has 2 shots at 28%.

I need to figure out which method of getting X is better. But when I google percentage calculators none I find has such capabilities.

And no, I'm not gonna work it out in my tiny penis brain.

Reverse it.

The fail condition is 82% 3 times in a row in one case, 72% two times in a row in the other

0.82 ^ 3 vs. 0.72 ^ 2

EDIT: and yes, I'm on my phone and too lazy to use a calculator myself right now.

Iirc this is binomial distribution; google that for calculators. Keep in mind that if you're unfamiliar with probability/statistic you may find them confusing to use.

Tbh it's much faster to just calculate the probability yourself. Karovorak got the method right. Go for 28%.

1 - (1 - 0.18)^3 = 0.448632
1 - (1 - 0.28)^2 = 0.4816

Use Wolfram alpha.

"At least one success" is the metric you're interested in.

Do I need to install Wolfram Alpha or is it a browser thing?

Thanks, this worked. I'm surprised it can just read loose text like that.

NP I use it all the time and imo the app is worth the $2.49 or whatever they charge for it. Best calculator you'll ever buy.
