Amazon Studios' adaptation of the hugely popular gay romance novel Red, White & Royal Blue, following the secret love affair between the son of the U.S. President and an English prince, is now streaming.

In particular, the moment where Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), after a series of rushed and frantic fumbles, make love for the first time.

"In the book, their sex life is such a powerful part of their connection," director Matthew Lpez told Digital Spy.

"And I really wanted to show something that I hadn't seen much of in mainstream movie making, which is sex between two men that is loving and connected, and that is emotionally resonant. So we took great care with that scene... From the beginning, I told the studio that we were not going to shy away from the scene. There would be no tricks. It was going to be true and accurate to the way that two men have sex together."

That "accuracy" is one of the elements of the movie that is being praised by critics: it is rare that any piece of mainstream media portrays gay sexwith such specificity. Not just the act itself, but the preamble, the all-important discussion and negotiation of who will be the receptive partner. And it is this casual realism that makes Red, White & Royal Blue stand out from other rom-coms on streaming (after treating the subject matter with tenderness in the Paris hotel room, the film later plays it for laughs with a well-meaning speech about tops, bottoms, and Truvada from Uma Thurman's POTUS).

Now I'm definitely NOT going to miss this out.

The sex was also super romantic, which is something that isnt often shown between two men.

Movie is a breath of fresh air, honestly.

So far, the scene alone is getting a lot of positive feedback from viewers because of how romantic it is compared to the rough-and-tumble style of sex between men in some of the more explicit gay shows.

Its crazy that it has taken this long to show that gay men can have romantic sex too.

But anyway, definitely give the movie a watch. There is a reason why there has been so much fanfare. Movie (and the book) are really damn good.

Yay. More of these lighthearted lgbt romcoms plz. Okay, RWRB wasn't all lighthearted fluff and homophobia was still a major plot point. But still, make more.

I watched it last night. It was funny and really cute. It was a few steps less corny than a Hallmark movie like the trailers suggested. Also a step more raunchy. Still not sure it needed an R rating, but I don't have a firm enough grasp of where the line is to judge.

Prime Video said Wednesday that the new movie was its top film around the world over its debut weekend.

The streamer also reported the filmhas already entered its "top three most-watched romantic comedies (movies) of all time" in a matter of days.

Additionally, the platform said it noticed a "huge surge of new Prime membership signups directly correlated to the film's release."

"The phenomenal debut of Red, White & Royal Blue is a true testament to the entertaining and inspired storytelling led by the creative minds behind it. Matthew Lpez, Casey McQuiston, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Ted Malawer and the entire talented filmmaking team hit it out of the park, Amazon MGM Studios executive Jennifer Salke said in a statement.

We are so proud of this delightful, heartwarming film and could not be more thrilled with the response from fans existing and new.
