some people ask why but the answer is pretty obvious.

What exactly is ocean exploration even going to accomplish? Expanding beyond being a one world species seems more important than mapping the floor of an ocean we can't do anything with.

Ocean geology and ecology are critically important, it's not a pointless effort

Considering space exploration has more potential, it's not really a debate.

Right now, we're about as likely to find ghosts as we are to find aliens.

Space exploration is also about finding more inhabitable worlds, we haven't found another planet like Earth yet but that would be huge. Even if travel there would be an impossible task today, it might not be impossible 50 or 100 years from now.

Building underwater cities I guess. We don't have anywhere close to that kind of technology required though.

Even if we did the cost would be astronomical, it would be like building a city above ground then amplifying that price by about 100 times. It also doesn't serve much practical purpose today, it would just be a cool tourist attraction type of thing.

Generally speaking, it would probably be more efficient to just go the Japanese route and build artificial islands off the coast.

Rather than building domed cities that have to hold out trillions of tons of water pressure, some kind of platform or even barge-based design would probably require less technological advancement and be far less maintenance-intensive. Doubly so if it was more of an arcology than a traditional city.

It would only be done in the far future if we ran out of space on land.

It might also be more necessary if global warming radically changes the planet, to where the water slowly encroaches and takes away more land. It would also dodge a lot of the weather issues that would happen from global warming, since deep in the ocean you typically don't have to deal with that stuff.

But we have no idea when/if this situation happens, until then it would be something to do just to say we did it.
