If we're using time as the metric, what about the I dunno, 4 years of full time practise he had before ride the lightning, 6 years before master of the puppets, 7 years for and justice for all, etc.

Seems like a pretty decent amount of time. I started playing drums at 12 and by the age of 16 I was maybe second best in my school, and that was just practising like 2x a week.

I'm not sure what you're laughing at?

He did learn the drums a week before he joined at the behest of James and he was in the right time and place because he was able to join a band that become one of the biggest in the world even though he was operating on a week's worth of experience.

And yet his fills to this day still sound very rigid and amateurish. My favorite album by them is Ride the Lightning because that's the only one where I feel like he demonstrates a capacity for high speed and intense drumming. In the majority of the music he comes off as "good enough" for what's happening, but he's notoriously dogged on for having lame and simplistic fills that don't benefit "the greatest drummer of all time", as their most fervent fans assert.

It all depends on the person and the genre of music. The drummer from the pop band Tokio Hotel had been drumming since he was 7 and was I think 19 when their debut album came out, yet you listen to what he plays and it's first year stuff. His genre doesn't call for him to excel or demonstrate his skill, however metal is the direct opposite because it and jazz are some of the few genres where skillful musicians aren't punished for demonstrating their skills by their listeners. Given that Metallica is considered one of the founding fathers of metal, he's just unfortunately one of the weakest aspects of that foundation, especially compared to the rest of the Thrash Big 4's drummers.

But my main point was that Lars wasn't selected because he was some badass drummer James salivated over, he was their friend they asked to learn drums, he's quoted as thinking he was terrible when he first saw him.

Skill is not always necessary to become famous, Ulrich is the poster child for that.

You make some excellent points. I think I just kinda like that Lars is Lars, and no one else on the planet drums like that (for better or worse).

One of the GOAT drummers everyone forgets about is Phil Collins. His Genesis days are some of the best prog drumming around. He's influenced countless drummers including Mastodon's Brann Dailor.

AND he has the skills to back it up. I will forever simp for the Collins

They never should have made that album. They all hated each other, James was going through rehab and therapy, Bob Rock had worn out his welcome, etc. The only good thing to come from that entire period was the hiring of Rob
