On July 29, 2024, Xbox will stop supporting the ability to purchase new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace (marketplace.xbox.com)
Related to this change, the Microsoft Movies & TV app will no longer function on Xbox 360, which means TV and movie content will no longer be viewable on your Xbox 360 after July 29th, 2024.
Between now and July 2024, you can continue purchasing games and DLC from the Xbox 360 Store and at the Xbox 360 Marketplace.
This change will not affect your ability to play Xbox 360 games or DLC you have already purchased. Xbox 360 game content previously purchased will still be available to play , not only the Xbox 360 console but also Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S devices via backward compatibility.

Funny, I was talking to my mom last night about how eventually, someday, all these digital media storefronts will shut down and some media will become inaccessible, and used the Wii as an example that she could relate to.

To be fair, this will be just a few months shy of the 360's 19th birthday, so it's certainly more reasonable than the Wii/U/3DS shutdowns. But yeah, it's still another reason I prefer physical.

I dont get how this is a digital vs physical thing, lol. Its not like anything you bought digitally will be lost here.

The difference between this and what happens with physical releases is that you're actually aware it's happening. Also you don't have the option to pay $500 to some asshole on eBay for the really popular stuff I guess.

....Gears of War games can't be right, can it? The Halo games aren't on here so it's excluding re-releases. I guess I just assumed they'd done Gears of War HD at some point.

They did do Gears of War HD. And all of them are available on the XBONE/XS stores

But isn't the deal there that stuff from the 360 store gets displayed ontonthe X/S store for a cleaner UI? I don't have one myself, just going by vague memory.

Those lists are always a bit wonky. Like the PS3 one includes MGS: Legacy Edition, which is just weird to consider it's own thing at all.

I would certainly like to believe that anything backwards compatible would migrate to the actual storefronts of the active consoles. They pride themselves as the company that cares most about backwards compatibility

If it had a physical disk you can go to ebay or something.

Which reminds me, why has Avatar Golf, the best golf game with the easiest golf course maker ever to exist...never been released on steam.

You could always buy a physical console with the game installed on it from Ebay!

When you actually get to the level of obscurity most games hit that's largely not as available even at collector pricing as people believe.

Let's be real, eBay isn't really a reasonable option with how fucked the retro gaming market has become. Piracy is legit the only true form of preservation for these games, and it's perfectly viable and not even really any more ethically compromised than propping up the scalp bros who'd have you pay hundreds of dollars for a single Gamecube game. Not like the developers or even the publishers are still making money on anything that truly "goes away" like this.

Most games that dont have a physical version dont have one because that would have been an unreasonable ask. Digital-only storefronts, especially in the 00s, allowed so many more games to be released than would ever be possible if every game needed a physical copy.

This entire situation is not an argument for or against either physical or digital. Obviously ideally both options would always exist but that isnt reality.

Not really. A lot of games are backwards compatible, but more aren't.

I do think it's a minority of good games that isn't backwards compatible however. But at that point you're still in the 'video game preservation' argument; even if it's not good, it is disappearing (and forever if this now gives Sony the incentive to try to shut down their PS3/PSP/Vita store again).

At the end of the day the physical releases will also deteriorate and cease working over time, hell this has already started happening in some cases. Saving a digital game for archival purposes really isn't different from saving a cartridge you've dumped or a disk you've ripped.

I wonder how active the 360 player base is nowadays. I know the older CoDs on Xbox recently had a resurgence with their servers getting a fix but I assumed it was a ghost town

If the games aren't accessible from the current Xboxes then you're pretty much fucked even if you have a 360 or a truckload of 360s. Remember the consoles were terribly built and they will pretty much all die relatively soon. Maybe the later revisions will last longer but those are probably like at most 15% of all 360 consoles...

That's the thing, Syndicate is 100% playable on the newest generation of console, but it's not available digitally anymore D:

I know I could always play it on PC, but my progress is on xbox, and there's zero shot I could get my old co-op homies to play it there lol.

Sonic Free Riders just got a fan patch to make it playable with a controller making it arguably the definitive edition, so not much is gonna be lost there.

The list posted earlier doesn't seem complete to me. This is the one I've seen floating around the most, but I don't think the bolded games are wholly accurate - I haven't checked on my Xbone, but I think titles like Death Tank and Vigilante 8 Arcade are 360 exclusives that'll be caught in this sweep.

I'm taking the opportunity to go through the marketplace altogether and pick up other stuff in case we see more delistings follow. Great time for recs if anyone knows any stuff that's XBLA exclusive or where the XBLA version is the best available.

And while Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection isn't technically a 360 exclusive, you can only get it right now on Xbox 360 because it's been delisted on Steam and PSN.

Do games only found on the Xbox 360 Marketplace still go on sale? Or is it like the PS3 and Vita store where no sales ever happen anymore?
