The GI bill helped many get houses in the 50's and in some ways helped many start a middle class life. Is it even possible for them to try something like that today? With how hateful congress is these days seemed...unlikely but...not sure how much it would take to do something like that.

It was something like this. https://www.archives.gov/milestone-documents/servicemens-readjustment-act

More or less the government all but paid pepole to have a middle class life, a lot of them at least. I feel like something like that is the only way most pepole would ever be able to not be swept away by the changes in society but with are divided congress I admit I know it seems like pigs will fly before they do something like that again.

The GI Bill when I joined in 01 was college tuition paid for, i'm assuming it still works the same with sign on bonuses, I don't see why they couldn't offer the same for purchasing a home if you'd rather that over college.

It's a bit different now - back then a ton of people were drafted into the military, whereas now it's 100% voluntary.

We do still receive a ton of benefits, too. VA loans for houses, there are currently two "main" GI Bill options out there and the different branches are investing in increasing amounts of professional development and educational opportunities. And it pays for trade certifications. Like... there are a ton of benefits to military service.
