What is the "actively defensive" part supposed to mean?

It's equally as vital as the very air I breathe

To keep my chosen character alive for as long as I can is akin to keeping myself alive. I will save at a red light or in the midst of a tragic jam. I will save in the middle of work. I will save in the middle of a nap because I've set my alarm to wake me up. I will save. My. Favorite. Final. Fantasy. Character.

Now I have a question for you, why did you put a u in favorite in the topic title? Are you British?

I know BCT is American but as a Canadian I instantly caught & appreciated the extra u!

If people cared about stuff I also care about I might have larger interest. But I just keep it to token saving when I can.

Got to be honest I have never participated in it. I was going to many years back, but then I had a look at the past contest results I couldn't understand how a contest that is held every year with largely the same people could have such wildly varying results. I have just taken a look at the current contest and to give you an example you have Cloud, Zidane and Tidus (characters who would do well in any B8 contest, and im sure one of these must have been top 5 in a previous SMFFFFFC) ending up lower than Ktjn (a very, very minor character that you do not have to talk to at any point of the game - and for the record FF12 is my 2nd favourite of the series). So I don't actually know what the contest results tell me, and it seems more like luck if a character was to do well or not.

Obviously I'm in the minority because it still has a huge following, but I thought I'd say why I don't participate.

I definitely used to be #1, then fell to #4, now I'm #7. Still I'm actually looking forward to re-participating next year with some FF16 characters since I loved that game so much.

Caring more because people who don't like your character care so much and you want to ensure they make it as far as possible.

Usually after a character wins, most people who supported them move on to try to get championships for their other favorites. Stuff like Ktjn is because some people like to push pet projects to see how far they can get (well Ktjn specifically was a bit different).

I feel like there wouldn't be much of a point in running it so long if everyone just saved the exact same characters year after year after year (no offense lefty).

legitimately the only reason I saw this topic is because it did not start with Save My

Im nearer to cave than gen. I like to have a look from time to time and I will occasionally throw a save to a character I like if I see a friend is supporting them and needs a save. I would never take it seriously but its a very clique thing. Like its impossible to have your favourite character win unless youre either a) very lucky and someone is going all in on it or b) you have enough time and influence to arrange to trade saves with people day after day, hour after hour. Im in neither of those categories so I just keep it casual.
I do love me some stats though

Cared more when I lived in a more suitable time zone but hard to care as much these days since I miss more rounds than I make

Oh no, (what I thought was) my (blatantly obvious) humor didn't carry over into text format!

To be honest, there was once a time when I did take SMFFFC as seriously as a 1, but I realized how much of an issue it was becoming to care that much about it and took a step back. I was recently a 4, didn't care for the results of that one so now I'm back up to a 3, maybe slightly more invested than your average 3, but 2 doesn't describe me and 1 ain't me anymore. I guess I'm a 1.5? Still kind of sad, but not pitiful imo.

"I really find comfort in this game where I can help Garnet, my favorite character from Final Fantasy. Garnet means a lot to me and playing this game makes me feel like I'm doing something important. I often feel like I'm not good at things in real life, so achieving stuff in this online contest feels like a big deal.
