I'm really pissed off with myself. Once again I accidentally let Rinoa die for no reason, I assumed at least one of Socko or Keeby would get FF8 but it's my own fault for not offering an NR earlier. Every year I do this, for fuck's sake.

I made it through unscathed. Tifa, Aerith, Cindy, Barret, Rikku, and Jessie are all still in.

One of them is most certainly going out in the next two rounds, of course. I recognize that. I was prepared for it to be today.

Rinoa is a great character, but she was barely hanging on for so long, even compared to other FF8 characters. It was her time.

Yeah, I can't complain, Rinoa had a great run. If it wasn't today, the rule change almost certainly would've killed her sooner than later.

Rinoa is a great character, but she was barely hanging on for so long, even compared to other FF8 characters. It was her time.

She seemed to be doing fine to me. She was my #1 to Ghido's #2, the only reason I was still maining Ghido is because she hadn't needed my help. I was fully prepared to ditch him for her as soon as she needed me, which is why I'm really annoyed with myself, I could've thrown an extra two/three saves at her per round. The past three years her eliminations have been partially my fault for not committing hard enough, I always fuck it up. I had a '2NR for Rinoa' post lined up 15 mins before H3 but I was holding hoping it'd get back to me, and once I saw you and pj were there I assumed she'd be ok, I hadn't paid enough attention to your and Socko's other priorities. Same thing will happen next year, of course.

Fuck, I hate how I always mess this up. And now Ghido can die any round and I'll have none of my favs to go to.

Gotta learn to abandon a #2 when the real #1 is in even the vaguest sniff of danger!

The year Gau became last VI standing was a case of me not knowing when to let my pet project die. The rest of that contest was fairly dire for me.

I appreciate the regards! Car maintenance is ROUGH. My alternator blew out and took the battery and drive belt with it, so that's $1300 right there. My CV axle exploded and leaked grease everywhere, so that's $600 more. And the last $800 is heat shields for the exhaust that rusted and fell off. The $600 I deferred is for the power steerage line and cabin air filter, which can both wait six more months. This is all since early May when my car was in for another $1200 of repairs (flex pipe and spark plugs). I figure since I already invested that and I got some bundled discounts on labor (plus a couple after-market parts), might as well.

But that's the thing, she didn't appear to be in a sniff of danger yesterday! I thought I probably had an H3 in case she needed it, or I was gonna offer an NR or two if it got tight. But then I thought she was fine. If I'd thought about it for a few mins at the end I would've offered NRs anyway, but I thought between my potential save and the three FF8 crew she'd get at least two from that. I'm getting tired of making the same mistake every single year then waiting a whole other year to try again and then fucking it up the same way >_>

Also worth noting Vivi was gonna be my #3 if both Ghido and Rinoa fell, so... lol. I know all this is my own doing for pushing a turtle this far, and I apologise to other Rinoa fans for not effectively prioritising her. Since I've started participating in these she's never outlasted my other two main supports.

Last year it was Tidus who knocked out Rinoa at 9th, he was like 3-4 saves behind her and I hesitated for a second, then my net went slow and my save went through a tad too late and she was gone.

We should team up next year! I'll be backing Angelo for Year of Pets, but... honestly, I view that less as trying to get the championship and more as just a fun project to push some pets and see how far they can go (similar to this year's moogle run). Once Angelo inevitably falls, moving to his dog-mom feels natural. If you're onboard, I'd be willing to back Rinoa #1 and Angelo #2, like how I did Eiko/Mog IX this year. All I'd ask is that you support Angelo too, and let Ghido fall when the time comes. He's already conclusively beaten the hares, the tortoise can finally rest imho

It's hard to know when to let go of an underdog run

That is an appealing pitch but I should note the Ghido stats debut is next year, and it's a tough sell for him to drop in 50s or 60s in favour of a one-and-done Angelo, when Ghido's pulling two (and ideally three with this year!) top 20 finishes to-date

Honestly I never expected Ghido to get anywhere near as far as he did in any of his years, I initially nominated him because I wanted to make my own little personal mark on this contest... and somehow he wound up finishing in the teens twice in a row. I have to put all my saves into him to keep him going, in a way his success is a bit of a double-edged sword that has stopped me from helping all the others I like. As Leon says it's difficult to just abandon him at a set mark, knowing I could drop him Day 1 or Day 71 and he'd be dead that very round.
Of course I knew all this going into this year's contest, and I had every intention of dropping him for Rinoa when she needed it, I just didn't think it was now. I don't know what to do next year, I can't trust myself to just drop Ghido at this point. I do like that idea though Roba.

Do whatever makes you happy!

And don't do things that don't make you happy.

Have fun however you have fun, imo.
