I'm jk I actually read it all and I admire the passion at that level, a level I'm familiar with.

However my heart was already with Quistis when she invited Squall into the Training Centre. To a nice comfortable "secret area" where he couldn't refuse. Because of the implication.

I like FFD'S fanfic Selphie but I don't think it has any more basis in the character than X-Death running for Treasurer

I mean FFD's interpretation of Selphie's character is more valid than a nonsensical fan theory that renders the entire game's events meaningless

Solid point. Also how she killed a monster with a GF in it when she was like 10. But still.

And yeah I'm not claiming she's all psycho all the time, but in the sections that focus on her (ie MGS and the Ragnarok) she definitely is. And every single party member makes comments about being scared of her.

I'm not trying to force my view on anyone if you're not buying, but I definitely think it's a valid interp of her character.

I don't know why all this stuff happening in Squall's dying brain makes the game meaningless

Squall's internal struggles are a theme of the game with the normal theory of the plot too. It just becomes a weird psychological piece more than a traditional story.

Because the game has zero resolution if Squall dies there and nothing that happens in the rest of the game matters if it's just a fever dream

Like we only need one Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, just go read it instead of forcing it on a game where it doesn't work

What's the resolution? Squall dying isn't the resolution to the story.

It's a cute meme idea but I've never seen a story do something like that and not make it a lot more obvious. Like this is final fantasy we're talking about. You'd have to be very naive to consider it a real intended possibility.

Oh ok slightly misreading because I'm going backwards.

Still there would have to be some heavy script changes to make it work.

My fault

Squall dying at the end makes the whole GF memory plot and the BIG PLOT TWIST completely meaningless. It's Squall holding onto his memories of Rinoa that allows him to come back. He has to hold on to them, and if doing so means nothing, then there's just no reason for that to even be part of the plot.

Squall dying is the beginning and the end of the story.

Disc 1. Setting up world and characters, start of the catalyst for the story.
Disc 2-4. Journey through comatose/dying Squall's mind as he passes getting less and less sensible as he gets closer to actually dying.

Like, ok bro, but comparing this to Treasurer X-Death is egregiously disingenuous.

"I think Cecil died when the leviathan hit because going to the moon doesn't make sense and is stupid"

Tidus' Zanarkand was the real deal and he simply drowned like his father did in an unfortunate boating accident, and he dreams of going on an adventure and reconciling with his dad.

Wow I improved the story!

The act of going to the moon is pretty minor

The big things that make Squall is Dead plausible (besides him getting actually murdered on screen, unlike Leviathan) are the Orphanage tying the entire cast into a bow, the love scene tying into the moon, and the stuff during/after the Ultimecia fight

That and the theme of FF8 having so much Squall introspection/self dialogue.

Like it's super Squall focused unlike FFX or FFIV

I get that people like to make fun of VIII's story, but the theory doesn't hold up under any real scrutiny and can only "work" if you're someone who (like pj said) thinks VIII's story is silly.

I bet you've watched over 100 stories with main characters who look like they die in the first half.

Edea succeeded or the team minus Squall stopped her. It doesn't matter because that's not the story being told.

First act being irrelevant to the end of the story is pretty common in FF games. Does Shinra matter in the end of FF7? How about the Death Corps in FFT? How about the returners and the empire in FF6?

Shinra matters till the end of disc 2 tf

It's more like they have a big "we are still here guys" moment towards the end of disc 2. I would not say they're super relevant after like halfway through disc 1.

Also all those events absolutely impact the rest of the game, even if they aren't still around (saying Shinra stops being relevant is kinda silly though, they just become the secondary threat).

Those plot threads also actually get resolved.

I also don't know how much support Selphie has been getting from the FFVIII crew in general up to this point. Seems like she's mostly been getting by through the SHEER WILL of FFD.

Technically 5 of the 11 playable characters!

But there that's not even the only "coincidence" of the series. Do you have a problem with how Squall and Rinoa's parents met? Or how Ellone has a magical gift and also happened to be connected to all these people?

Do you honestly think Edea matters much after mid disc 2? I don't.

Frodo actually died when he was stabbed by the Witch King in Fellowship. The remaining 2 1/2 books are just his dying dream.
