Is this a meme at this point? Unless its some highly niche market Im unaware of, I have been getting interviews in Seattle area tech/IT with just an associates and 4 years experience paying $70k+

I went to college for something completely unrelated to what my career ended up being. After working mostly minimum wage jobs due to the lack of actual available work in my chosen career (teaching), I ended up taking a 6 month course to learn to become a computer coder/mobile and web app developer. The company that ran the training then hired me, and I worked for them for almost 7 years.

As the tech industry took a hit, work dried up. I was laid off. Since then, I've tried to find a new job. I ultimately keep getting passed over, since, despite having 6+ years of actual on the job experience, I don't have a computer science degree.

Is that fair? I don't know, you tell me.

The entire thing, is that employers are being absolutely ridiculous with their employment expectations. That's it. That's the point.

It's all one big daisy chain here, he says it's clear education is needed, TC is saying that it's insane that they require education and then pay near minimum wage, and you're saying it's astonishing that they require things, despite immense experience.

I agree. It all sucks. And going to automated resume checks has only made the problem worse.

ah yes the common ENTRY LEVEL position that demands 10 years experience and a PhD. The job market is a bad joke

I dont think theres ever been a shortage of teaching jobs.

And that is why Trade schools are the way to go.

There was for a decent while from 2006 on for awhile. It was mainly due to tenure. If you wanted to be, say, a gym teacher, you were fine. But if you wanted to be English or History (I was English,) you basically had to relocate to the south, at the time, because teachers were remaining in their positions longer than ever, which lead to less job openings.

And, beyond that, teaching at the time was all about who you knew, and what connections you had.

Temper your expectations with this because its VERY hard to find an apprenticeship if you go the trades route

Overall, if you dont know the right people in any career, you will have a tough time finding a decent job. Only jobs you dont need connections for are jobs nobody wants like working for Amazon.

In fairness, I wasnt teaching at the time and have never had any interest in doing so in the US, but that seems crazy to me. From the moment I qualified Ive felt like Ive been in high demand.
