But I heard college was a scam and there was no reason to get a degree? You're telling me they're important to get jobs? This isn't the "gotcha" you think it is. I went to college for something completely unrelated to what my career ended up being. After working mostly minimum wage jobs due to the lack of actual available work in my chosen career (teaching), I ended up taking a 6 month course to learn to become a computer coder/mobile and web app developer. The company that ran the training then hired me, and I worked for them for almost 7 years. As the tech industry took a hit, work dried up. I was laid off. Since then, I've tried to find a new job. I ultimately keep getting passed over, since, despite having 6+ years of actual on the job experience, I don't have a computer science degree. Is that fair? kind of agree. I wish there was a place I could just post my resume, and get employers to look at it. Because right now I've been jobless for 8 months. 5 of which I couldn't work, but even 3 months without work is ridiculous. I could go back to my old job at Wal-Mart but they mentally abused the fuck out of me to the point where I just didn't enjoy working. I might have to go back to Wal-Mart if this keeps up for another month. I got a call 4 days ago from a recruiter who assured me I would have a job interview on Monday and he would email me the details. When Friday came and I didn't hear back from him, I emailed him and he simply said "The job is on hold, I'll get back to you". I don't believe that for a moment. Now I'm locked into a deal with this random guy I just met and can't apply for that one position, which for all I know could be open and willing to hire me. It also only pays 20/h, which is a lot if your used to working retail, but in the IT field its stupidly low for an entry position, with similar positions paying 26-30/h. But right now I'm in it just for the experience, as money can come later. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Right. We don't actually disagree. My whole point was college education shouldn't be the end all, be all, especially when compared to actual on the job experience. And I'm arguing from a place where I had actual college experience in one thing and still couldn't get a job, and so I moved on to something else, where, just a few years later, I now can't get a job in BECAUSE of lack of college experience. I dont think theres ever been a shortage of teaching jobs. There was for a decent while from 2006 on for awhile. It was mainly due to tenure. If you wanted to be, say, a gym teacher, you were fine. But if you wanted to be English or History (I was English,) you basically had to relocate to the south, at the time, because teachers were remaining in their positions longer than ever, which lead to less job openings.
