Speaking of, it's only the first day and 8/18 of our top ten predictors are already down one: Koala, mnk, Gen, Suprak, Arti, Fiop, Stifled, and myself all had Quina reaching the top 10 :(

And a new iron stat: Vanille has now outlasted Cindy in terms of days lasted post-Iron woman. She can only be caught by Montblanc, if he lives two days further than she does!

So after today's round I put together some not-so-fun bonus stats: since this was a back-to-back elimination I thought I'd check previous series back-to-back eliminations in the lefty era. "Series" instead of "games" to include characters like Paine or Cissnei with characters from their original mainline game (same way they get grouped together in the contest).

So this would be the 2nd time it's occurred this contest after Auron & Paine (66th and 67th, respectively). From the rest of the lefty era, # of times per contest:

XX: 2
XXI: 7
XXIII: 2
XXIV: 5

and in contest XXII, there were 4 back-to-backs and - unique to-date in the lefty era - a three-fer.

between that year and this year, mid 60s aren't a good place for FFX characters eh...

Lastly, this is the first instance of back-to-back eliminations involving FFIX characters during the lefty era, the past instances covered FFV through VIII, X, XII and XIV. So IV, XIII and XV have dodged it so far, XIII came close thrice with 87 Snow, 89 Chocolina in contest XXI, 69 Sazh 71 Fang in XXII and 90 Snow, 92 Nora this year. Bit surprised on XV considering the boot bloodbaths it's been through but I guess the XV characters were sufficiently spaced out, on further review never got closer than a 3-spot difference (twice in XX with 93 Prompto 96 Iris and later, 44 Cindy 47 Noctis) (Edit: on further-further review XV had the back to back boots in contest XIX so I guess that's what I was thinking of)

Clan Nutsy (Peacetime, 0AP, Recharge 1): Montblanc, the trusting friend that he is, will convince two mercenaries on different enemy teams to join Clan Nutsy for the week. Together, they go on a quest to slay a miscellaneous monster before collecting the bounty at the pub. Each mercenary will receive 2-4 GP for finishing the quest, but will be 30 seconds late for battle that week. If Montblanc's team fights against one of the mercenaries who joined Clan Nutsy for the week, the delayed mercenary will show up wherever the rest of their team is instead of the starting point of the match. Montblanc could never keep a friend from going home! Additionally, Montblanc's team will get the same amount of gold as his compatriot's in Results. If the fight against Montblanc's team takes place on Jagd Dorsa, and Montblanc's team wins, the enemy team will receive no GP.

Jagd Dorsa (Pre-Battle, 1 AP, Recharge 1): Never die in a Jagd. Montblanc may grant his attached mercenary the ability to use Jagd Dorsa as their terrain this week with a +1 TP bonus added to its bid.

(Terrain: Jagd Dorsa -- A small section of the town Jagd Dorsa as seen in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. For the purposes of this fight, the town is a small island floating in nothingness, as the concept of the rest of the town does not exist in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Mercenaries may not be revived, and any abilities that place restrictions on what actions, equipment, spells, or otherwise may be taken or used (non-exhaustive list) have no effect here.)

The Gays! They're trying to murder Montblanc! (Trigger, Recharge 1): If any mercenaries have the ability to engage in a same-sex relationship or romance in any of their games, come battle they will try to murder Montblanc's attached mercenary before killing the rest of their team. They are not in a blind rage and will be able to account for enemies and defend themselves, but will prioritize killing Montblanc's attached mercenary nonetheless.

UPGRADES:

(New Ability, 20 EXP)

The Laws of Ivalice (Pre-Battle, 0AP, Recharge 2): Montblanc is oblivious to the fact that he's in a video game where arbitrary fighting laws apply, and that can extend to today's mercenaries match. Montblanc's leader may choose one subclass of weapons (e.g. not gun but sniper rifle or shotgun, or not sword but katana or broadsword) and one spell element that may not be used offensively or defensively by either team.

(Ability Upgrade, 10 EXP)

Montblanc may add 1 additional recharge to the cooldown of Jagd Dorsa to add a second TP to its bid.

I completely empathise with this, I felt the same with Ghido when he got outdone for last V standing by Galuf and then Faris, and lost best newbie to Ktjn. It's nice to feel like you've made some kind of mark on the contest, though I'd say taking Montblanc to top 20 after he was almost booted is already pretty impressive!

Supposedly the story is gonna be released at 1 chapter a month, so putting it off may not be too bad. But starting it right away may also put you at a fairly slow pace, which is probably good if you were to play the game casually for the story.

So hopefully the game isn't too demanding of your time.

Ok let's be real here, this is nothing new for FFVII. It's been this way like almost 2 decades ago with Before Crisis and Advent Children.

only thing that makes me hesitate on Glenn = Cloud's dad is that Cloud is 21 and First Soldier apparently takes places 21 years before FF7, but knowing S-E it definitely sounds like something they would do. And assuming Sephiroth eventually kills Glenn then it just adds one more thing into the Cloud vs. Sephiroth mythos.

Edit: ok I read it was 21 years somewhere but apparently that was in an intro cutscene, another article says 18 years, not sure if that helps or hurts...

It's true, I've always been an AC and Compilation hater. My one hope when the remake was announced was that they're steer clear of all that stuff.

That would be stupid as fuck. If Sephiroth killed Clouds dad theres no way in hell he wouldnt have mentioned that in FFVII as just one more way to fuck with him.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Nomura's "Compilation of FFVII" writing. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Vincent's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Tetsuya Nomura truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Cloud's existential catchphrase "Let's Mosey," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Nomura's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.
