So out of curiosity, what kinds of characters are everyone playing?

File Not Found with Alien DNA, Empath, and Wanted.

Basically played it up like someone who was involved in some secret stuff and lost their memory or whatever (to make sense as I don't know all these factions and places going in fresh) after bailing. Now they're fucking about trying to get their shit together Disco Elysium style while an unknown party put a price on their head

Fun encounter was while maxing out pilot skill to get access to the highest grade ship, one of those super top tier bounty defender ships showed up during a bigger attack in a random system for the first time. After the explanation (and wanting one of those super ships) I shot out its damaged engines (managing to just barely avoid destroying it outright due to the damage it had already taken in the attack) and raided its huge crew. Many bullets and more shenanigans later I now upgraded to a new fancy ship and ditched my shoddily edited Explorer ship...

I then proceeded to get fucking arrested on my way back to New Atlantis to fix up my new prize as it had contraband on it lmao. This then spiraled into the whole Crimson Fleet quest which made the whole debacle even funnier.

I'm having trouble boarding ships. Is there an easy way to take out the engines without blowing up the ship? Maybe I need to change my weapons or something?

1) Get the targeting skill, and aim for the engines.
2) Use an EM weapon, which the Frontier doesn't have.

I have done neither of these things, so I'm just repeating what I've heard.

Ah the targeting skill definitely seems to be the missing piece.

I'm kind of surprised how much conversations don't bring up relevant choices based on your character, for a quick example I joined the UC and if I stumble across pirates fighting UC in space the conversation after is always 'gee thanks for helping us for no reason!' without the option to be like 'I'm in the UC.'

And another example that relates to BIG SPOILERS (guessing midway through the story or so, but spoilers ahead!)
The Hunter shows up and kills one of your crew mates, he killed the person I was married to and at no point is it ever even mentioned that the person he murdered was your spouse. And the next time you see him you're forced into having a friendly conversation where you can't attack him and there aren't really any convo choices that are 'you murdered someone close to me, i will kill you.'
Also your dead companion shows up from an alternate universe and your character reaction is pretty muted for seeing your recently murdered spouse.

I'm enjoying the game, but it really doesn't do much to push the Bethesda formula forward.

Yeah my immersion has been broken a few times because you meet a lot of characters doing quests. Then after the quest ends and you try to interact with them again they'll be like "Who are you and why are you in my house?"

Like bro we just spent an hour together rescuing your farm or whatever.

I get that it would be hard to account for all of this kinda stuff and give characters multiple dialogue options depending on your relationship with them or something but it's still kinda lame.

Yeah, I feel like that kind of stuff happened less in the past games.

I was talking to an important faction character, and during the ambient dialogue they called me Rook, which is the nickname everyone calls you. Then when I asked them a question they said Yeah? Whos askin?

Im like, you JUST called me Rook like you know me lol

Finished the Vanguard quest -- first faction I've completed -- and it was a surprisingly good story line.

But then I was angry at the game within half an hour afterwards because it gave me my first apartment, so I went there and tried to furnish it, and...I can't navigate the menus. Z and C toggle between the headings, but I can't pick anything below the top option because there's no way to go down. I'm convinced the devs expect you to use a scroll wheel, which, again, I don't freaking have.

Seems silly to get mad at or even quit a game over their unwillingness to implement alternatives to a scroll wheel, but unless I've failed to find the option -- and I'm pretty sure I've pressed every key on my keyboard hunting for it -- I'm being locked out of game content unless I also keep my controller plugged in and use that for those sections instead.

Finished it up, was decent overall just lacking ambition. One thing about NG+ kind of killed any desire to do another run though: Your bases and what you've scanned on planets doesn't carry over. :|
