The TC in the CDC topic blocked me

Anyway, I don't see a logical reason to differentiate people who refuse the flu or covid vaccines from any other antivaxxers.

Statical outliers aside who genuinely cannot get em.

If you want to call me out, call me out. I'm not anti vax because I don't believe my healthy self needs flu and covid shots every year. I took the initial double jab, my kids are up to date. Maybe when I'm old and decrepit I'll think about yearly boosters but as it stands now, fuck that.

There is a difference, but I'm not sure it's worth differentiating. My aunt has been an anti-vaxxer since 2011 because her grandson was born with autism. She is completely convinced that vaccines are what caused it.

The recent anti-vaxxers are mostly the fault of the Maga crowd, but their reasons for hating vaccines are equally as stupid. So different reasons, but still bad reasons

You're the reason covid is endemic. Your refusal of a vaccine objectively makes you an antivaxxer.

don't be obtuse. the 'politics' are about whether people should do something for the benefit of the collective over the individual.

people on the left generally believe folks should get these shots to 'slow the spread', even if someone isn't concerned with getting the virus themselves, because slowing the spread of the viruses generally benefits the collective.

people on the right tend to favor the personal choice, and don't believe the 'collective benefit' outweighs their right to decide what to put into their bodes.

I do feel people should take vaccines when there are proven benefits. Such as the COVID and flu vaccines. That isn't in doubt at all. It helps save lives. Vaccines have been amazing over the years. Look at polio ffs if you need any more proof they are a net good.

Now this might still be up for debate. And rightly so because even now the evidence is still being considered by top scientists. But I feel based on what we've seen something as ubiquitous as COVID is very very hard to stop transmission of entirely and I firmly believe the priority should now be on protecting those most vulnerable to it. I believe the same to be true of the flu and any transmissible disease that is going to affect vulnerable people. This is why in the UK the care home issue was such a disgusting fuck up in my mind where people with COVID who went into hospital were sent back to care homes with known COVID and you hear stories of entire elderly care places being decimated. That's not cool at all.

To me one of the key factors on the macro level for getting the vaccine during the height of the pandemic is to reduce the load on health services and stop us being overrun. You don't want the hospital beds full of people who would be ok had they had the vaccine taking spaces from those who genuinely need it. Now this is up for debate but I personally don't feel like you could ever stop COVID entirely. It's a global pandemic and whether we got hit during the pandemic or a few years later when everything had opened up it was going to spread eventually. The places there were very zero tolerance on COVID eventually got hit and still suffered deaths. The importance was getting as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible to reduce the amount of people having COVID at once and to slow the spread more than stopping it outright. That way if people did get sick - and you can still get COVID and die despite being vaccinated or not in a "at risk category" so it's not limited to vulnerable people here - that there would be the resources available to help you. If it's running rampant that just increases the risk you won't be able to be cared for.

So in my mind the situation of taking the vaccine during the pandemic and taking it now are miles apart. I was for forcing people to take the vaccine then. I still think most people should take the vaccine because you never know who you are going to come into contact with. People who work with vulnerable people should still be forced to take COVID and FLU shots every year. Everyone else should be free to chose but I would heavily hope they would because you don't know who you will come into contact with.

People just need to be fucking considerate. Sadly something that's missing in the modern world and its not just a US issue. I'm from the UK and it happens here as well. Some people will just not take it purely because they are asked to. That depresses the fuck out of me.

I know quite a few people who 100% believe in vaccines and have no issues getting them but dont get yearly flu shots. I knew lots of co-workers, friends, and family who dont get yearly flu-shots but absolutely jumped at the opportunity to get the Covid vaccine. To me there is absolutely differences between anti-vaxxers and people who dont get yearly flu shots. I wouldnt group them together.

Those tend not to be people who refuse to get the flu vaccine.

The TC specifically said refuse and that's a different attitude compared to just not bothering with getting the yearly shot.

I rarely get the flu shot just due to not being willing to bother. If there was a flu pandemic going around I'd get it just to be safe and help protect others but I've literally never gotten the flu(or at least have been asymptomatic everytime I have had it.) The wife and kids get the flu shot every year though.
