1. Mean Spirits
2. Make Believe
3. Simmer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCiYX-iC0Hk

I only know one song from this band, and its on this album (The Pit), and I liked it enough to bookmark it a few years ago. Lets see how the rest holds up!

Skin Graph opens with a nice instrumental before the singer (Brian Aubert) steps up to the mic. I forget how unique his voice is. Very androgynous, smoother than Id expect from a rock outlet. This is a great opener, a nice, full sound that shows off what to (presumably) expect: catchy hooks; power rock with quieter moments (or maybe its quiet rock with power moments?); drone-like guitars. Its a little overlong but thats okay. Color me intrigued.

Nice 7/8 meter in Make Believe. This is a moodier piece. The band is on the prowl. I get the impression of wandering around a dimly lit forest, watching for wolves.

The album reminds me of a 90s throwback so far Im seeing comparisons to the Smashing Pumpkins, who happen to be one of my favorite bands (you got lucky on that, Isquen!). So overall Im vibing with the music. Three songs in and nothing has stuck out as an all-time favorite yet Id describe the album as competent more than enjoyable but its been good so far.

Its a bit hard to believe that Bloody Mary, which Im not enjoying at all, was apparently released as a single over the previous three songs? (Also wow is that singles collection album cover triggering.) By Here We Are (Chancer), Im reconsidering the Pumpkins comparisons this feels way moodier than your standard Pumpkins big production sound. I like the backup vocals on this track from Nikki Monninger, who also plays bass; she shines over top of Auberts singing at times, and at other times they play off each other. The drumming from Christopher Guanlao is also pretty solid in this track. Mean Spirits finally presents a more uptempo rock number; I find myself more drawn to these tracks, which might just be the mood Im in but is also probably because theyre, well, more engaging to listen to! Mean Spirits is just a fun rock song. Sometimes thats all you need! This is the first song on the album I would conceivably save onto a playlist.

As soon as Mean Spirits ended, I relistened to it. I dont know if, 32 albums in, Ive done that with a song yet. O_O I would unironically (for perhaps the first time in my life) refer to that song asgulpa banger.

That guitar riff from Simmer sounds like Life Will Change from Persona 5 lol. Another energetic song, this one is a mix between the moodier, slower songs and the faster paced ones. SSPU (Super Smash Pickups) are very consistent with their sound. Now that Im into the second half of Neck of the Woods, Im more into their style, especially, as I said above, the more energetic tracks. (Edit spoke too soon! There are a few slower songs in the back that I dont like as much)

The Pit, as I said above, is the only song from this band I knew prior to today. AndI dont think it holds up to some of the rest of the album! Its probably the highlight of the slower-paced songs for me, but I wonder how much of that is familiarity. Either way it doesnt hold a candle to Mean Spirits.

Out of Breath, last of the album, does a Simmer-like riff at the beginning that grounds me in the song. I love songs that have little elements like that, little catchy riffs that permeate throughout. As Skin Graph leads us into the albums world with a mix of fast and slow in anticipation of whats to come, Out of Breath takes us out on a high note, inviting us to come back later. The song ends on a mysterious note:

When all the pioneers are gone
And all thats left are unresolved
Out of step opinions
Its life or death once more

But you say the word and I will come
With overbearing clouds of warmth
Out of breath but not alone

I think I interpret this as SSPU telling their fans, life can be shitty but youre not alone, say the word and well come running. I dont know if thats meant to be taken from the POV of the band/Aubert or if its a fictional POV, but its a compelling note to end on, a sort of sense of hope that life might just get better. I didnt adore this album but I found a lot to comment on and gravitate toward. In the end, sometimes thats okay; sometimes its enough to find little moments you enjoy. Sometimes its enough to say the word and open yourself to things, to know youre not alone.

20. William Shatner Has Been

1. It Hasnt Happened Yet
2. Thats Me Trying
3. What Have You Done

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YA5J88ik64

I am in a bad mood and William Shatner is not helping.

Ive been listening to all of these in mostly one sitting, certainly not longer than a period of 24 hours. In the interest of being fair to Has Been, I am going to space out the listening period overwell, over however long it takes to listen to it. Or maybe I should say thats in the interest of being fair to me. If I tried to listen to all of Has Been at once, I might lose my ties to corporeal earth and descend into a demon-scented abyss, where William Shatner is played on the intercom all day. So this writeup will be written piece by piece, song by song. Hope you like it.

Has Been opens with a cover of Pulps Common People. Ben Folds has provided the musical backing for what sounds like, if Im being uncharitable, a vanity project for a film and TV star. Shatner delivers the lyrics to the song in a spoken-word delivery that feels like hes winking at the listener, like yeah, I got fucking Ben Folds to make this album, isnt that cool? Shatners delivery picks up in intensity as the song goes on. Foldss production and the additions like a choir feel ill-fitting. Id almost rather listen to Shatner speaking over top of silence. (Be careful what I wish for)

It Hasnt Happened Yet actually sort ofworks a little more. Its more understated and actually fits Shatners delivery. Moreover, the lyrics actually sort of work too. Its a poignant meditation on aging and self-worth. This song is worlds removed from the goofy cheesy bravado of Common People. Is it weird that Iactually kind of like this? I expected goofy cheese from the opening song, but if more of these songs are like this one, Im certainly intrigued!

Okay Youll Have Time is a big step down again. These lyrics are not really that good? I get that Shatners going for a Baz Luhrmann sunscreen song thing, but it feels pretty silly, and its only 1:30 in and it already feels like the longest fucking thing in the world. This does not need to be more than five minutes long.

Thats Me Trying is another vulnerable song, about Shatner (or a character hes playing) reconnecting with his daughter after twenty years. Theres a swerve in the song where Shatner insists on not talking about any of the bad parts. And theres also the curious refrain that speaks of Years of silence / Not enough. I feel like what hes saying is only part of the story, and the rest is up to interpretation. I like that.

What Have You Done isreally intense! Just Shatner and a mic (and a dead woman), speaking raw poetry about finding his wife drowned in the water. Holy shit what is even happening on this album. I think Common People is indisputably the worst opening song to any album I've ever heard in the sense of preparing you for what's going to come and making you want to keep listening. Im enjoying a lot of this!

Not as into some of the back half. Has Been (song) is fun but I just connect more with the more contemplative songs.

Has Been features, among other musicians, Aimee Mann and Henry Rollins, which is really incredible to me. A song like I Cant Get Behind That is so intense, even without Rollins; Shatners delivery is perfect here, full Angry Old Man mode.

So uhhappy to have been wrong about this one. Maybe judging it off of one song and then starting a writeup based on that wasnt the best idea, but hey maybe you got a laugh at least. Very cool album, very unexpected.

I'm glad you mentioned your bafflement at why Nerve Endings was the primary single they chose for this album, because it's probably my thought for biggest stinker on the album!

I'm also glad you mentioned your appreciation for his voice. I... honestly don't like Smashing Pumpkins very much, which is why I get confused when people compare them all the time.

Ha, glad you enjoyed it!

It Hasn't Happened Yet is my favorite too, I think this combo works best when leaning into the beat poetry/lounge jazz thing, and thematically it's a fun play on the whole 'Has Been' thing. Admittedly I also get a kick out of the Trek connections between the theremin-like background voice and Final Frontier references in the lyrics.

I love that you mentioned What Have You Done? too. For all the expected silliness of a Shatner record it has this very serious, painful center and in some way is a record about death. This track always gets me a little emotional.

I did listen to all of Passenger yesterday, and it was a pretty interesting album. Lots of neat synths, rhythms, and soundscapes throughout. I do think that it feels a bit too all-over-the-place thematically and compositionally for me to really want to go back to any of it though. Rainforest Collapse I-III were all neat, but my personal highlights were U-Turn and Birdhouse.

I like the gradual buildup in End of the Line quite a bit. It never feels its length because of that. The vocalist is pretty great too. The solemn, acoustic outro is worth highlighting as well. Great song. I wouldn't actively seek out this album, but I think I'd enjoy it if I were to listen to it.

Scatman is a classic. Eurodance is not something I'd expect to go well with scat-singing, but he makes it work surprisingly well with this album. Just a bunch of plain fun songs.

Haven't really caught up yet, but I want to talk about Has Been for a minute. I actually bought the album back when it first came out without knowing anything about it; I enjoy laughing at terrible things and have a soft spot for novelty albums, so I was actually listening to a lot of earlier work at the time & was actually looking forward to something horrible like his attempts at music before & after "Has Been".

I was not prepared for how emotional and powerful some of the tracks were. "It Hasn't Happened Yet" blew me away at the time & "That's Me Trying" has become unexpectedly relevant to me for personal reasons I won't get into. Pretty neat we have the same top two, though I also find "Together" to be oddly compelling. The spoken word seemingly stream of consciousness intro is strangely fascinating and the music feels... odd, somehow, in ways I've never quite placed. It feels kinda like being in a rewinding tape, somehow? It's not really a favorite song, but an interesting experience that I enjoy revisiting occasionally.

Very pleased to see the album get nominated and get some positive attention.

TOUSOU's growly vocals are definitely not my thing. Instrumentally, I'm not sure how to feel about it. There are some neat guitar parts here and there, but it's mostly a bit too much. I'm not sure if I would enjoy this album or not.

I did listen to all of Neck of the Woods. It was a great Silversun Pickups album, even if I think I like Carnavas better. The stretch from Mean Spirits to Dots and Dashes is especially awesome. Great guitar riffs and catchy melodies in each of them. Pretty cool that this album placed this high.

It Hasn't Happened Yet is really cool. The instrumental is subtle and poignant. I love the ethereal vocals in the background. The panning in the spoken word vocals is really well-done as well. I could see myself enjoying this album if I were to listen to it.

Did some more listening last night. Cant wait till I have my own paragraph of censored Shatners.

I am mildly threatened by The Bitter Suite IV and V: The Congregation and The Sermon in the Silt right off the bat. It's definitely the circus-y music. As this song goes on, it's pretty fun! This feels like the kind of thing a villain in an animated movie would sing. Ah, I remember when Disney movies still had those!

I kept listening to Basket Case when I ought to have been listening to other things! I love the unpolished sound and holy fuck I love how catchy this song is. I fear this may be trading the earworm back and forth with my dearest Frog (On the Floor) ...

I tried to find the Skip Ad button when More Data began and I had a laugh. I wonder how many other people had that knee jerk reaction. Presumably not anyone in the audience already familiar with Negativland? Anyway, I'm such a huge fan of this style of music, like sampling voices? Parts of this remind me of a more chill work from Frums. Such a trippy (complimentary) song. And some kind of ... horror vibes? The help me's over the chill music is wack. Sorry dude I can't help you I have Pokemon Go to play.

Rough Steez is definitely rough alright. Oh what the fuck is this??? It's almost tribal sounding? This is so weird. I don't know what to think about this. My cat is staring at me. I think he's concerned. I think this is one of those songs I'm going to listen to again after all of this is over. It's cool, but in a way that's overwhelming me (and also I'm sleepy at the time of writing this).

Yeah, Genesis fucks, and Dance On A Volcano only solidifies these thoughts. I am just loving the places Collins goes with his voice. Just all over and all around. Oh my goodness I'm living for the end where it goes all proggy and crazy.

19. NEUPINK DOPAMINE HELLDREAMS.

1. TRASHFIRE VISCERAL
2. DEVILS EYESHADOW
3. DUST AND MOONLIGHT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U2f9nPAm5c

This has such an ear-catching opening: a lone guitar-like synth plunking out a minimalist melody, which gives way to reverb-drenched vocal samples. From there the album goes to even stranger places: dense soundscapes, anxiety-provoking moments, guitars that sound like screams. IN MY OWN DELUSIONS evokes a flatline near the end.

By the third song, DUST AND MOONLIGHT, Ive realized I have no idea what to expect anymore apart from the general sensation of discomfort, which I love in music. DUST AND MOONLIGHT simulates the act of drowning with its stuttering effects. THIS SCAR UNDER MY LIP has vocals so distorted the words are virtually unrecognizable does this reflect the pain the album conveys? DEVILS EYESHADOW starts out like some sort of Mega Man fangame and then turns into one of the darkest songs on the album, with a powerful intensity. NO HEAVEN starts with sort of a chopped up wedding march. My favorite is TRASHFIRE VISCERAL; the name sums up what youll be getting.
There are some songs I dont enjoy as much, like SMILES OF GHOSTS. The dense soundscape is there, but I think this album works best when its blisteringly fast, not slower-paced. Actually a few of the later songs are a bit on the slow side compared to the first half.

This was the first album I listened to for the ranking. Im very pleased with it I really genuinely enjoyed listening to this. Clearly this is a sign of how much Ill enjoy the rest of the nominations!

TRASHFIRE VISCERAL is peak music. Happy you enjoyed it so much! I just kinda threw it into the topic since it was the most interesting thing I had listened to and enjoyed from that timeframe, but it honestly has fallen a bit off my radar. I actually relistened yesterday since I saw it hadn't dropped yet and it's still a banger, just not one of the more memorable ones I've listened to in the past year.

18. XoArK - P()~()..8

2. 1_17-19-21

Heavy on glitch and dnb. I really like weird glitchy shit so this seems right up my alley. wurmple_658385643478450179 (what a name!) wastes no time in getting into things. Lots of fun with panning and echoes and reverb and very sharp, jagged sounds. Whoever XoArK is, theyre committing to this aesthetic 100 percent, and I love them for it. I like it a little less when it gets calmer though. But it still does amazing panning like at 4:10. Holy shit give me more of that. Inject it directly into my veins.

"Get all 361 XoArK releases available on Bandcamp" that isa lot of music.

Env sporeexplosion (what a name again!) is more chill, but still has that intense dnb energy to it. Really vibing with this album so far. Claim editor also falls into that ballpark. This album keeps its aesthetic consistent but still keeps managing to surprise me, an impressive feat.

I wasnt into 1_17-19-21 that much at first but then it started volume spiking me and also the overall atmosphere feels like a Metroid soundtrack. This ones much moodier and more ambient than the rest but I think it might be my favorite so far? wurmple would take it but there are some parts that drag compared to 1_17-19-21 (which is funny to say, given how this is much longer and more static). Ill need to relisten at the conclusion. Edit its deffo wurmple wurmple is queen wurmple rules.

I like the little bits in stunk394 that sound like an animal chirping. Track 8, Xufugus mifurgic, opens with factory noises, a quick way to my heart. I can only assume XoArK used all the available song titles in their first 360 releases so theyre left with titles like Xufugus mifurgic and Frog-processor_042952, hehe. Its tough to parse these out as individual tracks. On the one hand thats bad because everything sort of blends in together. On the other hand thats good because its an album and arent they supposed to sort of do that? Starfish_foam does present the feeling of coming to the end of a journey, like weve traveled through space together or some shit. Real trippy.

17. Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magik

1. Under the Bridge
2. Give It Away
3. Breaking the Girl

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UnU3r0M3zg

I know the Chili Peppers exclusively for their singles (some of which I like more than others) so Im not sure what to expect. The Power of Equality is very light and bouncy with a rock tint. Anthony Kiediss distinctive vocals fly above the rest of the song. Its a great opener, setting the tone for the rest of the album: rock with punk, rap, and funk influences. This fits in line with what I know of their singles.

According to Wikipedia, RHCPs manager wanted Blood Sugar Sex Magik to be more accessible than their prior releases. They succeeded: the album is full of catchy hooks and a dreamlike, euphoric state. This came out in 1991, the same year grunge was picking up mainstream airplay (and the same day, humorously, as Nirvanas Nevermind), but to compare this with grunge is like comparing a honeycrisp apple with a granny smith: both are good, depending on who you ask, but they give very different taste experiences.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is fun. Even as the subject matter veers into more serious fare relationships (Breaking the Girl) and even Kiediss drug use (Under the Bridge) theres a fundamental playfulness to the music that feels inherently accessible.

There are a lot of songs about sex, some of which arent very subtle. (Looking at you, Apache Rose Peacock.) There are some rockier parts, like the bridge to Funky Monks, which has a great guitar/drum solo; the song also ends with a great bass part. It feels like the band is cohesive, letting each member shine in different ways.

Theres a great transition from the frenetic energy of Suck My Kiss that immediately goes into the more acoustic I Could Have Lied. The album is full of little moments like that. And yet its entirely coherent as one piece. Thats quite the accomplishment. Guitarist John Frusciante is credited with the bands change in sound and exploration of new sonic horizons, as well as their producer Rick Rubin.

I do think some of the songs, despite the variety, blend together by the end. Perhaps this means the album is too long? Some of the songs I think you could cut and not lose anything, like The Righteous & The Wicked. The last few songs blend together for me. But then the Peppers do a song like Give It Away a manic, scatting burst of energy in the middle of the album and all is forgiven.

Almost out of top 10 spots on the songs list. Conversely, there aren't too many spots below 17, where the album ranking is now. (Yikes that #39 and 41 are still there, though. The albums those are from must be one heck of an overall mood.)

1. Crash Into Me
2. #41
3. So Much to Say

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGMAYYJY3rg

I know the big singles from Crash, but not the deeper cuts. That includes So Much to Say, a good-hearted number about personal identity: I find sometimes its easy to be myself / Sometimes I find its better to be somebody else. Its a great intro to the album, with the band on full display through solid drum and guitar, and Matthews singing in his unique voice. Two Step, in contrast, is moody, with plenty of fiddle parts. From the outset DMB displays really solid range.

Crash Into Me has been a keeper since I first heard it. Such a dreamy, wonderful songthat I dont think I ever realized was about voyeurism haha. So funny that this was the breakout hit of the album maybe listeners, like me, didnt pay too much attention to lyrics like Hike up your skirt a little more and show your world to me. Not very subtle!

#41 is very immersive from the first note, with that interplay of sax and violin and the more conventional instruments and of course Matthewss vocals. Great sax and strings solo. Say Goodbye has terrific drum work. For a band named after the frontman, the other members really get to shine. I also like the instrumental outro of Drive in Drive Out. A lot of the back half of the album is pretty samey, so I dont have a lot to add. It doesnt catch my ear as much as the front half but its not bad. I recognize Tripping Billies surprised its all the way down as the next to last song. Proudest Monkey is an interesting closer: meandering, slow-paced. It feels like a jam session.

This was a real treat to listen to. Though the back half all mostly blurred together, there are some solid songs and consistent musicianship on display. Good stuff!

2. Jeep Sex
3. Skidoos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfV8M91A5Rk

Ive never heard of this artist before so I dont know what to expect. The first song, Even White Horizons, is about as silky smooth a glitch song as Ive ever heard, with production reflective of its period in musical history. Several samples loop over repeated beats and glitchy effects. This is terrific to listen to on headphones (which is how I listen to everything). Installation reminds me of something fromDJ Shadow, maybe? Something trip-hoppy without lyrics. Akufen is tapping into that subliminal space in my brain where impressions like that live. Its very cool. Its also very good at being background music. Nothing wrong with that! Skidoos has really greatI dont know why but I want to call them 90s rompler presets, whatever that means, lol. Plus it has crunchy percussion.

Three songs in and My Way might wind up one of the most consistent albums in the ranking. The songs all blend together, sure, but Ive said in other writeups that this doesnt bother me when considering the album as a whole. Given the choice between an album of consistently above average songs and an album of extreme highs and lows, Im probably going to pick the former. Thus far My Way definitely fits into that category. If you like Even White Horizons, youll almost certainly the next two songs. Of course I could be wrong about predicting what comes next Ive been wrong before and will continue to be wrong in the future. Thats the fun of stream-of-consciousness writeups >:)

Aaaaaaand Im wrong lmaooooooo. Deck the House does something so different, and I love it holy shit. The song isnt smooth like the first three; rather, it leans in the direction of choppier samples, like shorter than a second. The effect is disorienting, especially since I was treating Skidoos like background music and then Deck the House starts and its HOOOOOOOLD UP BOYOOOOOO. Songs like this remind me of Oneohtrix Point Nevers Replica, which was almost nominated (and almost certainly would have won, or at least done exceptionally well). Very cool. Apparently the genre for this is microhouse. Will need to look up more like this.

In Dog We Trust is a bit of a drag. I wish it used a wider variety of samples in its main riff and not just the kenzu one. Late Night Munchies is another song that could probably stand to be five minutes and not ten minutesalthough I take it back, now theres an extended percussion sequence, which you have probably picked by now that Im into, with what sounds like various household objects. That makes it worth the trip! The last track, My Way (song), is a bit of a departure, less sampling, more singing (albeit singing a brief phrase).

This was a cool listen! Some of the songs went a little too long but I really enjoyed my favorites. Deck the House in particular is a real keeper. Thanks for sharing!

14. Rise Against - Endgame

1. Make It Stop (September's Children)
2. Satellite
3. Broken Mirrors

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIGqnneLUWc

I wasnt looking forward to this album. All I know about Rise Against is a vague sense of genre (emo metal) and that brings with it a certain vocal style that I will charitably call nasal and shrill. But frontman Tim McIlrath brings an understated understatement to Endgame (album). The opener, Architects, could easily have been a disaster for me with different singing, but McIlraths voice doesnt reach the high-pitched nasality of other pop-punk bands. For that, I am very grateful. Help Is on the Way is another good example of a song in this style that I actually enjoy. But is it more than the singing? Either way, the whole package is held together for me by McIlraths singing.

Disparity by Design reminds me of a Bad Religion song.

You cant fill your cup until you empty all it has. -Satellite

Its tough to parse these songs. Im enjoying them, but Im having separating them for the ranking. There are worse problems for albums to have! Midnight Hands is the first song I dont really care for. Which is funny, since YouTube comments suggests the song sounds little like the bands normal output. I wasnt really feeling Survivor Guilt until the last third, when it picks up in intensity.

Endgame (album) has pretty solid guitar and drum work. It doesnt fall into the trap of being overly repetitive (most of the time). While I think McIlrath is the linchpin of the Rise Against wheel for me, I do appreciate the other energetic components of the bands wheel. Everything feels like its working together, a pretty important aspect of music for me.

Not a lot to say about Endgame (album) except that I was very pleasantly surprised. This is pop punk I can get behind.

[EDIT: since I didn't say anything about the top song, I'll add that it's a poignant and somber reflection on a tough topic. It's also really catchy!]

Rise Against is more hardcore/punk rock than metal but I get it, although honestly when I hear "emo metal" I would say more like early Parkway Drive and Evanescence to a degree.

I think Endgame is where Rise Against fell a bit off for me, Siren Song of the Counter Culture is my favorite and The Sufferer & The Witness is right there at peak with that. I think their later albums got a little too radio rock-y for me but I could see the appeal and they still have some bangers. I support them in general as a band.

The three Rainforest Collapse are quite good; though, I wish I listened to it in chronological order rather than 1st -> 2nd -> 3rd place. Rainforest Collapse II is probably my favorite of the three. I like that twang.

Murder by Death is quite fine. End of the Line is my favorite by a large margin, though.

Scatman is a classic. It's nice to hear other songs beyond Scatman.

Hanabie is fighting an uphill battle for me and lands in "I didn't mind it." I call that a win.

SSPU is good all around. Simmer's my favorite, but I feel like it goes on for a little too long.

I didn't follow Shatner for a long time, but I often thought about "Shatner-style singing" for a lot of songs before realizing that Shatner has been doing this for a while. Three really good picks for something I thought for sure would be a meme album.

DOPAMINE HELLDREAMS is pretty good. I actually listened to SMILES OF GHOSTS when I zoned out and it was pretty good. I'd probably be pretty happy about this album overall.

I really enjoyed wurmple, but the other songs are not quite my cup of tea.

I enjoy RHCP quite a lot. Under the Bridge is fantastic.

I like #41 and So Much to Say more than Crash Into Me. I was really surprised how much I enjoyed #41.

Deck the House is very cool. Jeep Sex and Skidoos are different, but also very good. Great 3 choices.

Make It Stop is one of the better pop punk songs I've heard.

1. Carry Stress in the Jaw
2. Merry Go Bye Bye
3. Everyone I Went to High School with Is Dead

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YEtHy9iEmg

This album opens with the tragically named Everyone I Went to High School with Is Dead, this slow, dirge-like opus that digresses into noise. But I like noise! Its a strong opener. Then it segues into Chemical Marriage, which almost sounds like elevator music. It couldnt be more different from the first song! Im very intrigued. The third song, Carry Stress in the Jaw, sounds like super technical jazz rock? I am notoriously bad with genres but Disco Volante seems to deliberately defy them. Carry Stress in the Jaw pivots effortlessly away from jazz toward a deep metal sound, with harsh bursts of staticky feedback alternating with quieter moments. Its 9+min length covers other areas too, including playfulness, jokey vocals, and even a bit of surf rock. Im not sure Ive ever heard something like this before!

Albums like Disco Volante are making this project worth it. How rewarding it is to discover a hidden gem from an artist Id never even heard of, while having zero expectations. Each of these songs pops out, stands out in its own way. Everything is unique sonically, full of little surprises. I adore the feeling of listening to a song and having no clue whats going to come next.

Violenza Domestica opens with what sounds like metal scraping on metal; these industrial sounds persist through the rest of the song. Steiner I dont know if weve ever meaningfully interacted but youve nominated something that is very to my taste. I could do without the mouth noises though lol

Im getting the sense that this singer is holding back, so to speak. Almost all of his singing is silly or overly tinny or, for a few moments, loud and growly. Its fascinating to listen to a singer who seems wholly unconcerned about traditional presentation. After School Special is probably the first time on the album Ive heard him sing for longer than five seconds at a time. Again, not a fan of all the mouth noises, but thats my only actual criticism as of eight songs in.

Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz (the eighth song) is another big epic mess (in a good way), cycling through moments of calm andless calm, sometimes approaching overwhelming (again, in a good way). Parts sound like circus music. I do enjoy evil-sounding circus music. LOL and the fakeout ending was great.

A few of the songs dont excite me as much. For instance, The Bends and its multiple fadeouts and fadeins are a bit too meandering for my liking (yes, even for this album!). The singer also seems to have swapped out mouth noises for heavy breathing XD The end of the song is great, however; Im a sucker for these big climaxes that immediately cut to nothing.

Why does this end with the most conventional-sounding song on the album lol (Merry Go Bye Bye)at least until it turns into noise. Disco Volente keeping me guessing until the end I guess.

Overall this was a blast. I love music that keeps me on my toes. Good nomination!

1. A WONGGA DANCE SONG
2. A HUMAN TUBE
3. ADELIC PENGUINS

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmG14Jc4K1U

No clue what to expect from this one except that its going to be super interesting. The first song, the intriguing named A WONGGA DANCE SONG, is a great opener, for me at least: sharp percussion, minimal melody, pounding beat. There are mechanical noises and what sound like abrasive trumpets and eventually there are chopped up vocal samples. TunnelScene certainly going for points for shit Ive expressed a liking for in the past haha. Fun fact I tried reading a book when A WONGGA DANCE SONG started but I immediately stopped; this is a song, and presumably an album, that demands my full attention. (Not that I havent been giving everything its due attention!)

THE DREAMING isI dont know if its technically minimalist or not, but its sparse, thats for sure. Very ambient and environmental. Lots of rattling. I dont like it as much as A WONGGA DANCE SONG, but its still super cool. As of this writeup I havent heard anything like this among the nominations.

Holy crap A RAIN SONG is awesome. I adore the bubbly arp-y sounds you see it a lot in older VGM. It reminds me of Porky Pigs Haunted Holiday Ruins of Atlantis:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OBhTqYYZyA

This is a song that takes me to outer space. Holy crap. And then DOLPHINS is more New Agey. Big chords and that rattling, mallet percussion again. This ones sparse like THE DREAMING. I can see myself really gravitating toward this one in the right mood.

Whoa @ A HUMAN TUBE (great name). This feels like something out of an alien horror movie, where there are aliens being preyed upon by an alien serial killer. It really evokes a sharp sense of dread and terror. This is among my favorites on the album. When the ranking is over Ill have to remember to put it on my Music That Fills Me Up playlist.

ADELIC PENGUINS uses bursts of silence very effectively. I love when songs do that, like this song by Garbage:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ3pSebnoJ8

But then the song opens up into a much fuller soundscape, fuller than almost anything else on the album so far, though it still has hallmarks like a surreal bassline, rattling percussion, and glitchy samples. Esperanto is great wow.

Picking a top 3 is going to be tough. I really like almost all of these songs, and theyre all so different. ADELIC PENGUINS is probably the most conventionally appealing so far, so if youre reading this and looking for a good sampler, consider that.

A CARVED STONE returns to the minimalist/ambient production. Its the only song so far thats lost my focus. Maybe its that I dont find the main xylophone-type motif very engaging, or maybe its not changing enough over its substantial runtime for me to stay interested. But hey, one miss isnt too bad. ULU WATU, the last non-live song, is similarly minimalist, but the main melody is more industrial, so I enjoy it more. I love the fadeout around 2:25.

There are two LIVE songs at the end: ADELIC PENGUINS and a new song called Parolibre. The live version of ADELIC PENGUINS is incredibly similar to the earlier one, but Id need to listen to both back to back to judge effectively. Parolibre opens like Elton John and reveals itself to be a fairly conventional-sounding piano piece. (It has a melody! WHAT) Kind of a bummer!

This was a really terrific listen, really catered to my taste. I especially liked the tracks that focused more on weird percussion and vocal hits. Great stuff!

I am familiar with Spotlight, which I love; its a slinky ode to love and dance. Will the rest of Whats Your Pleasure? hold up? Find out next time! Or now. Whichever.

The production on Whats Your Pleasure (album) is clearly influenced by disco. Ive even seen folks calling it modern disco. This bodes well for me, as Ive always been a fan of the genre. Whats Your Pleasure (song) follows in that tradition. Wares vocals manage to be both breathy and full-bodied, a unique style I havent encountered much. Shes very glamorous and the album feels very classy, whatever those terms even mean.

Soul Central sounds like VGM (generally not a bad thing to me). And wow I like Soul Kiss. That string/synth sample goes a long way toward melting my heart.

I can tell this is going to be an album that keeps to the same aesthetic throughout. Thats fine by me, because I really like the aesthetic. Theres something to be said for consistency!

In Your Eyes is kind of a ballad. Still in the disco tradition, but a ballad nonetheless. Its pretty good. Everything on Whats Your Pleasure is at least pretty good so far. Step Into My Life is pretty funky.

By the end of the album things have started to blend together, but thats okay like I said, the total package is very appealing. Oh, and what a closer in Remember Where You Are big harmonies and strings and Ware in the center, holding court. It reminds me of a Janelle Monae track. I can see myself coming back to these songs, which isnt something I can say about most of the nominations.

Midnight Grand Orchestra - Overture [handsomeboy2012]
Neil Cicierega - Mouth Moods [Bitto]
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon [azuarc]
Shohei Amimori - PataMusic [cakophon]

Some fun stats:
- In terms of tone and genre the top ten run the gamut from country to classic rock, soul to singer-songwriter, ambient pop to vgm arrangement, mashup to vtuber. Two of the albums are listed as glitch pop [I Love You Jennifer B and PataMusic].
- Two of the remaining albums are from the 20th century [Peace Beyond Passion, The Dark Side of the Moon]. The oldest nominated album is still in [The Dark Side of the Moon]. There is one album left from 2023 [The Ultimate Arrange].
- Two of the remaining albums are largely instrumental [The Ultimate Arrange, PataMusic]. Of the eight vocal-centric albums, five(!!) feature female vocals prominently. You Want It Darker and The Dark Side of the Moon are predominantly sung by men. Mouth Moods, being a mashup album, has a mixture of vocalists.
- In terms of length, most of these albums are between 50 and 59 minutes, the longest being Peace Beyond Passion, at 59. At the other end, Overture clocks in at 24 minutes one of the shortest overall nominations.
- I want to give a special shoutout to mcflubbin, ZaziGuado, handsomeboy2012, and Bitto. The other six nominators all share with me overlap in the vgm community, so even though I made a point of not specifying what sorts of music I liked, it could be argued that knowing me gave them an advantage. But these four, to my knowledge, dont really interact with me much, if at all. Despite this, theyve managed to make it to the top ten. Well done!

Well be switching to two writeups per day starting tomorrow. This is a great opportunity if you want to catch up on everything thats been posted, whether its individual songs, whole albums, or just the writeups. And feel free to predict the rest of the ranking!

Im really happy this topic has gotten such great engagement. It seems like everyones having fun discussing and learning about new music, which makes me happy.

See you tomorrow!

Whats Your Pleasure is truly special. It seems like the start of the last three decades has brought us an iconic disco/dance-pop album - 2001 with Kylie Minogue's Fever, 2010 with Robyn's Body Talk, and 2020 with What's Your Pleasure. It's an album that made me fall in love with popular music all over again; my all-time Spotify stats still have WYP, Spotlight, and Jessie Ware as my top album, song, and artist!! My favourite tracks were Spotlight, the title track, and Save a Kiss, but more of them just keep growing on me with time.

The natural next step would be the Platinum Pleasure Edition, with eight bonus tracks to enjoy. Then there's her 2023 album That Feels Good, which has been described as a continuation of Remember Where You Are. It's not as strong as WYP for me, but Begin Again does top anything from WYP and is an early contender for my song of the year!

Mr. Bungle is fantastic, hyped to see that album high.

Of the top 10, I know only one of these records (Dark Side of the Moon obviously) and recognize only three of the artists altogether. I approve of all these weird nominations.

Snake actually won a ranking of mine once! Granted, it wasn't for music, but still.

I compiled this the other day. I think this is all the rankings I've run with the exception of the Pokemon design topic, which wasn't a ranking like these all were.

So here are my previous ranking winners:
- VGM: Mr. Bones The First Thing [Raetsel_Lapin]
- Game characters: Martin Walker (Spec Ops: The Line) [Snake5555555555]
- Pokemon songs: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Sky Tower [PIayer_0]
- VGM soundtracks (sets of five): The Gardens Between [kaonashi]
- Non-vgm songs: Owen Pallett I Am Not Afraid [kaonashi]
- Series by visual design: World of Tomorrow [Place]
- Non-vgm albums: ??? [???]

TRASHFIRE VISCERAL feels mostly like a wall of noise to me. There's not a lot to the song, and what is there isn't my favorite thing. Might be the first song out of all of rwlh's top tracks that I outright dislike. Idk if the rest of the album is also like this (probably not), but it definitely wouldn't be my thing if it were.

wurmple_658385643478450179 is pretty wild in a good way. Love the DnB elements mixed with the glitchy effects, making it a lot less repetitive than standard DnB. The slower outro is pretty neat as well. Cool song and I imagine the rest of the album would be pretty cool as well.

Under the Bridge is by far my favorite song from BSSM. What fantastic guitar and bass work. It feels a lot more fully produced than the rest of the album, which is kinda weird. The rest of the album feels a lot more raw to me, which isn't bad, it's just a significant tier lower than Under the Bridge. It's still a good album regardless.
