Are you really unable to comprehend that the guy having rung a doorbell doesnt change you and your neighbors reactions being weird and excessive? Is your expectation that people would be like Oh shit, a doorbell? Then its a good thing the cops were called and the neighborhood surveillance division was put into action!

Neighborhood watch is neither weird nor excessive. I've also acknowledged multiple times that using a drone for neighborhood watch isn't a normal thing, but I use it as a way to participate without having to confront suspicious people or watch them in person. Calling the police because some random person rang your doorbell at 11:40pm is neither weird nor excessive.

I read the topic.. a homeless person was taking a shower.

Have you ever been homeless before?
Do you know what its like to be homeless?

Most people here making fun of homeless would not survive one night on the streets themselves.

They attack the homeless out of fear , because they know it could happen to any of us, people treat homeless like literal trash in the streets.

If you had read the topic, you would know that it wasn't known that he was homeless until after the fact. This was stated many times. You're just ignoring that fact intentionally, then.

When I lived in apartments, I knew no one, for the most part, and I don't think there was a neighborhood watch. Or at least, I was unaware if one existed in the 3 apartment complexes I stayed in. They're very common, though.

There are at least a few apps dedicated to neighborhood watch these days.

You're intentionally ignoring details just to keep arguing. Cops weren't called "because somebody is in the area and ringing a doorbell."

An unknown person rang someone's doorbell at 11:40pm. Someone living in that house alerted the neighborhood group chat and called the police.

A couple people who regularly participate in neighborhood watch investigated. One guy drove around to watch what he was doing. I used my drone to watch from above, which is something I don't think would normally happen in a neighborhood watch. However, it's a great tool to be able to watch a wide area and take pictures/video, which has been useful in the past.

I live in a neighbourhood watch area.

People use the WhatsApp to inform each other if there have been any burglaries in the area and ask if someone can put their bins out while they are away.

Tailing strangers with drones is not a part of regular neighbourhood watch activity. In fact, the one time someone flew a drone around here, everyone got very pissy about it being able to look into their gardens.

The vast majority of police encounters actually don't go like that. I'm all for having a discussion about bad police and the "other" police who cover up bad policing, but let's not pretend that most police encounters escalate things.

This is weird as fuck and majority of CE agrees while TC still coming in as a die hard for their drone lol.

Neighborhood watch is great for looking out for each other. Cameras are used to catch suspicious activity and cops are called to investigate said activity. Instead you got people getting into their cars to follow a homeless dude who rang someones door bell and hadnt committed a crime and TC being a weirdo getting their drone out to harass the guy. The only time TC felt silly was when they were caught getting the drone out

The group chat is great and all to warn each other of suspicious activity. The act of following said activity to so fucking odd.

This is like a thing only white collar middle class people do.

Yep.
  • Just from a perspective of our neighborhood, we don't live in what would be considered a walkable area. We don't have people just walking by on a regular basis at all, let alone having random people ring doorbells late at night. The only things nearby on foot are a gas station and a few fast food places that are about a 15 to 20 minute walk away.
  • Women in general have to be more cautious than men. If he had rang my doorbell, I would have tried to talk to him through the doorbell to see what he wanted. I'm not sure if she has something like that installed on her house, but I don't blame her for calling the police in this situation at all.
  • Most of the neighborhood watch incidents for us are related to people walking around late at night checking for unlocked car doors. I've caught someone on camera stealing patio furniture with my drone in the past.
  • More benign incidents involve cows or horses coming over to our neighborhood from a nearby private ranch. I've actually helped the police locate them with my drone once.

The purpose of keeping track of the activity would be to let the police know where the activity is happening once they get here. Just from my experience alone, there have been a few cases where they've asked where things are happening once they get to the neighborhood.

It has been pointed out multiple times in this topic that some of the people playing moral police either didn't read the whole topic or they're deliberately lying about what happened in order to do so.

Nothing in this topic was meant to impress anyone. I was just posting about what happened and what I did. The point of making the topic was simply to have a discussion about what happened.

Misrepresenting what happened because people are either not reading the details or deliberately ignoring the details is a lot of what's going on here.

I'm perfectly fine with discussing whether one should or shouldn't call the police in this scenario, or decide to follow the guy around vis car or any other method. Trying to frame what happened as seeing a homeless person and deciding to harass them even after it had been repeatedly explained that that isn't what happened is just ignorant at best.

I've given multiple explanations in this topic about why someone would call the police in this scenario, why some random dude walking around at this time of night is weird for us in our neighborhood, and why we have a neighborhood watch at all.

I'd rather discuss the actual facts of the incident than go back and forth with people who are just trying to be offended and shaping this into something it isn't.

I would agree with the characterization that people participating in neighborhood watch are "playing police," somewhat. People who do this are typically calling police and putting in extra effort to get police the details when they arrive.

and you can't seem to grasp that people find it objectionable, while you call it 'Awesome'.

No, I understand that there are some people who have read everything ITT and disagree with things that happened for one reason or another. I'm having actual discussions with those people. Subjects such as:
  • Should someone call the police on a person ringing their doorbell late at night? I understand why people wouldn't. Personally, I wouldn't, but there are many reasons why someone would and I've listed a few of them in a prior post.
  • Is calling the police likely to escalate the situation? Statistics say now, but there is a larger discussion to be had about bad police and "other" police who protect bad police and/or cover up bad policing.
  • Did I word things in the original post and topic title poorly? Survey says yes. I wasn't thinking about that in the moment, though.

And your post is another example. If you had read post #69:

Well that was awesome Was sarcasm, which can be understandably difficult to discern through text. I wouldnt describe it as a giddy thrill. Thats just you making an assumption about how I feel about it. If you actually wanted to know or confirm how I felt during/after the situation, it would have been better to ask instead of just making an assumption. Same for you assuming I didnt think of the guy as a person. Everyone is a person. Everyone in any story is a prop for the telling of the tale.

Part of having a conversation involves asking and answering questions. I posted the details in the manner I did because thats just the way I felt like doing it.

You would know that the phrase "Well, that was... awesome..." was sarcasm. Which leaves me wondering the following questions:
  • Did just miss that post while claiming to have read the topic?
  • Did you read it and are now just trying to misrepresent things?

Which is it?

Moral policing is a type of policing. Hence the irony. Your fake outrage doesn't really work.

Do we really need to explain the difference between "Playing moral police" and "Playing police?" It has been pointed out multiple times in this topic how people are misrepresenting the situation in order to frame it as "seeing a homeless person and deciding to harass them."

Nah hes still cool. What he did last night was some dorky cringe shit and is doubling down on defending themselves that deserves to get made fun of lol.

No, I can understand why someone would view using a drone for this is dorky and/or cringey. What I'm arguing against is people misrepresenting the basics of what happened.

Nothing against watching out for neighbors, but your topic title is super cringe and comes off as pretty prejudice

This is also a fair criticism, imo. I definitely could have worded things better in the topic title and in the original post. I probably need to do a better job of going back and proof reading my posts in general so that I don't spend so much time editing typos or rewording something and not correcting the entire phrase/paragraph.

In the moment, though, I wasn't thinking about how my wording could legitimately be viewed as prejudiced.
