Yeah they are still scaling so I find it understandable. A few days back they had problems with images loading, and before that uploading issues happened for a few hours. They are definitely struggling to scale even with the invite system. I think if they just straight opened it, the entire platform would melt down. As for alternatives he hasn't had a hand in, I would consider a Mastodon instance that matches your values. I also have a Mastodon account on an instance that I contribute to monthly and it's been very rewarding interacting with the community, which has been a pretty wholesome experience thus far. The reason why I say bluesky is the only palatable Twitter alternative is mainly down to the user interface replicating Twitter well, along with the community being decent.
