One opened up down the street from me and it's pretty convenient. No one's ever in there and they have 4 self checkout registers so I don't have to talk to a human. It also has food and stuff. DG moved up.

I was just there lol I like it. Nothing is too crazy expensive on the average plus some items there are still a dollar as opposed to the Dollar Tree where everything is a $1.25 now. I've been getting pizzas there among other things. Plus I had a 5 dollar coupon off a 25 dollar purchase. Got a large pizza (screaming Scillian) Tyson chicken strips, hand soap, Febreeze and a little Haunted Inn Halloween table decoration just now hah

I prefer walmart, I feel like Dollar stores are better for picking up a couple of items you need now and then, and I like doing infrequent large trips over frequent smaller trips.

I have never been to a Dollar General or Dollar Tree. Those are the same thing arent they? I live in a sparsely populated area of the Midwest. They exist here but only in bigger towns and kind of in the ghetto areas.

I truthfully dont know exactly what they sell so I dont know the appeal of them. They dont interest me enough to find out.

Horrible with unnecessary stock: Also yes

From what I can recollect 'Dollar Tree' was absorbed by Dollar General's direct competitor Family Dollar. With Dollar Tree every item on the shelf is a dollar, whereas Dollar General takes a bunch of stock and sells it cheaper right next to their own takes of the same product.

They improved ours, and opened a DG Grocery like half a mile from the other one for some reason. They were a lot more reasonable like 3-4 years ago but still a go-to because our regular grocer is expensive.

I found one thing to hate about the new DG. They had a stack of bananas that said 40 cents. I was like damn, they're 59 cents a pound at the grocery store.

They rang up to 40 cents per banana at the register. I was like huh? Weighed one banana when I got home and it was 7 ounces. So over 80 cents a pound.

I think Dollar general had some high level restructuring recently, and it was actually for the better... can anyone confirm this?

Anyway, one thing to watch out for at any of these dollar stores is check to make sure those cheaper retail products are actually cheaper, and not special smaller size/weight that are actually more expensive by the ounce.

Don't have a Dollar General up here in my part in Canada. Do have a Dollarama, and that place is fantastic. Cheap snacks, art supplies and dishware.

When I was a kid they were trash. Not sure if it was like this everywhere, but kids in school were embarrassed to go in DG because they associated it with poverty.

Now it's like a small department store, but bigger than they were. And yeah certain things aren't cheaper like dairy products.

Dollar General has a huge market niche, in towns where the local "general store" was killed by the Walmart down the road, but the town isn't big enough for its own Walmart.

The one near me went through a renovation within the last year. It went from kind of a grubby place to having some fresh produce and nice shelves. They did a huge expansion of the cold and frozen food section. What used to be just a few cold cases against the front wall now goes the front wall and then down the connecting side wall practically to the back of then store.

It actually is more like a proper mini mart now. It has more name brands than I remember finding in the Dollar general I went to as a kid. In a vacuum, if they'd have taken the dollar general branding off the store and I wandered in I would have taken it for a a nice little small town mom and pop neighborhood market.

The Family Dollar on the other side of town did that this year. They're now a mashup with Dollar Tree.

These types of places are starting to take off. I suspect more people may be sick of driving to and fighting crowds at Walmart just to get a couple essentials if there's a place around the corner.

I have no problems with my Dollar General as I mentioned earlier. I just walk to it and it being described as a mini mart now is pretty accurate. They even have a decent diy/craft section at the one I go to.

It's not bad. It is a lot more convenient for me because it's just down the road. Walmart and Publix are pretty close to me too, but having the little Dollar General for just that one thing is nice.
