secret of mana has very good visuals and great music, but the gameplay sucks

multiplayer and the sheer novelty of the game isn't quite enough to consider it anything better than mediocre
How exactly does the "gameplay suck"? What makes it "suck"?

The original doesn't suck; the gameplay suits the quick pace, it's responsive, crisp, satisfying.

The 3D remake completely ruins that, with all the worst parts of 3D games, none of the upsides, and the pace slowing to a crawl.

Did you know that?
I knew this so much that I straight up killed my brother's first dreamcast via playing way too goddamn much phantasy star online and quake 3 arena. Like, the power supply or whatever straight up fried.

the dreamcast version is pathetic compared to every other version, including the gamecube rereleases. i have a soft spot for pso but the original has nothing to do

i wish the game would finally get a modern console port that adds content and fixes the balance

these are not the words i'd use to describe secret of mana. the 3d remake of secret of mana plays about as sloppily as the original but with bad performance, crashing, and questionable remixes. it's still the same top-down experience in the end. i think yiou're thinking of trials's remake or something because secret's remake barely changes anything

exploration is fine. magic is overpowered and promotes blind spamming and unavoidable boss attacks, hitboxes suck, and having to slowly wait to attack again makes every fight needlessly slow

Ah, okay. I've never played the 3D remake, but love the original.

Funny, I have little trouble with any of that every time I play. Then again, I don't blame the game for my inability to play properly....

I still play my original launch day Dreamcast all the time. Ironically, it's the arcade ports (the games that were out of fashion during their original releases on the console) that bring me back time and again, whereas I rarely touch the meatier games of the era that get all the praise.

Cannon Spike
Mars Matrix
The Typing of the Dead
Sega Bass/Marine Fishing
Dynamite Cop
GunBird
GigaWing
Marvel VS Capcom 2
Power Stone 1/2
Sega Rally
NFL Blitz
Virtua Tennis
Virtual On
Confidential Mission
San Francisco Rush 2049
Jet Grind Radio
Space Channel 5
Samba de Amigo

These are just the games I can list off the top of my head that I know I've sat down and played in the last few months. There really isn't another console that gets that kind of love from me, and I own and game on just about every console dating back to the Fairchild Channel F.
The Dreamcast is in a league of its own for certain types of gamers.

The era helps tremendously. I love me some NFL blitz, especially 2000. I can scream at that game all day.

For myself, i play a ton on my Saturn. I wish it had some of the games dreamcast does, but I can always turn on my dreamcast for some crazy taxi or blitz fix.

The Saturn is a tremendous console in its own right. Arguably more impressive than the Dreamcast for it's vast library of arcade ports alone... but that comes with a very large asterisk, because you can't even begin to have the conversation if you don't include Japan-only releases.
But man, the second you slap on an Action Replay 4MB cart, the Saturn becomes one HELL of a contender for greatest console ever.

As someone with his Saturn and DC hooked up to the living room tv I have to agree. 10/10 consoles.

And guess who just region modded their system?
I used to use the action replay, but I think it's really wearing on my slot; so, I invested in first party ram cartridges and really like snk games.

Does the dreamcast have bad/cheap plastic controller port...pieces? I have gone through quite a few controllers due to the controller ends becoming finicky.
My Saturn and it's metal pieces have been doing good for a decade plus. The only time my Saturn controllers have crapped out is due to me spilling on them or something, so all on my end.

Well it is a one-to-one hardware comparison with The Niamo Board. with only the exception that it had less RAM.
That and Sega was dominant in the Arcades for decades at that point.

You mean NAOMI (New Arcade Operation Machine Idea). It was essentially a more powerful Dreamcast made for the arcade and it was easy to port games to it. It was pretty much an "arcade perfect" system, aside from the Neo Geo AES.

I have...
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Cannon Spike
Project Justice (Rival Schools 2)
Power Stone 2
House of the Dead 2

I want to get a Dreamcast arcade stick. Unless I can find a new or gently used one, I would need to mod it to take Sanwa/Seimitisu buttons as well as a new stick.

The Saturn cart slot is notorious for going bad. Partly because all those third party carts didn't have beveled edges so it bent the pins as you put them in and took them out regularly. I have one of those red 4-1 carts so I have no reason to remove mine. Just flip the switch at the top between 1MB, 4MB, and AR style backup features.

Those dreamcast sticks go for a pretty penny these days. If you're just looking to use a fightstick on the dreamcast, you might be interested in the Brook Wingman SD. Allows you to use modern controllers on the Dreamcast and Saturn. It lets me use my X360 fightstick on those two systems.

Agreed. The American library kinda sucks. It's wild that 2/3rds of the Saturn's library never left Japan.

Obviously the Genesis sold a lot more than the others, but it is interesting how each Sega console had most of its success concentrated in a certain area. Master System was Europe (and later Brazil), Genesis and GameGear were US, and Saturn was Japan. Dreamcast was the one exception.
