I put TATO because it's the normal thing to make chips out of. Which was fine because it mostly works for the rest of the puzzle. And then 3 down gave me the correct answer.

An easy 1:40 for me.

Are you supposed to do these in a specific order? Like if you think 4down is shut, as in shut up ("stop talking, with up") then you won't realize 4across is China, but if you don't want to use the checker then you just kinda have to figure out when to second guess yourself when you can't think of a country starting with S that is a facial feature.

Clues ending in a question mark almost always have some sort of wordplay involved in either the question or the answer. It's best to leave those until you get some letters and then think about it.
