They aren't covered by the writers' union contract. IATSE had bargaining talks that almost resulted in a strike of their own in 2021:

Glad they were able to get the pay / benefits raise, but I still disagree with the idea that a show that needs one writer for a few weeks is now required to hire three writers minimum for 20 weeks. I have no idea how studios are going to actually deal with that, but I feel like it's going to push things in a fundamentally bad direction. Like, imagine if you needed to hire a plumber and the contract stated that you were required to hire three plumbers and you had to pay them to hang around your house for weeks after the job was done. I just fundamentally don't get how that's supposed to be about fairness.

Success-based residuals is interesting. Does that mean streaming services will actually have to share their streaming numbers now?

With the guild, yes. They won't be made available to the public, though.

with views calculated as hours streamed domestically of the season or film divided by runtime.

The Companies agree to provide the Guild, subject to a confidentiality agreement, the total number of hours streamed, both domestically and internationally, of self-produced high budget streaming programs (e.g., a Netflix original series). The Guild may share information with the membership in aggregated form.

We'll see how long the numbers stay confidential, though. Especially if every member of The guild has access to them. I can't see that stuff not leaking like a day after the guild in general has access.

Also, a lot of writing teams are stoked at now being recognized as two people, instead of being homogeneously credited and paid as if they were one.
