Because the first time I heard the term was a game called Gods. In which the boss of each level was refered to as a Guardian.
I just thought that was the standard term.Me and my friends called them Guardians for years until we started playing RPGs like the Final Fantasy games that call them "Boss" in text. I always called 1ups or lives "freeman".
