Maybe I'm just weird, but when my dad was dying/had just died, I made a point of not bringing it up in any sort of casual conversation or telling anyone unless it was contextually relevant. Part of that was trying to avoid putting them in an awkward position where they had to figure out how to respond appropriately to the news, but a larger part was that it let me go on with those parts of my life unchanged. Having that normalcy remain a constant presence through my life while I was going through the immediate grieving process was really helpful, I found, since it meant that I didn't have to be afraid of being really upset because I could trust that that baseline would always be there. My closer friends got the news without me telling them, though, so that kind of limited how often I actually had to bring it up.
Of course, that was just my experience and what worked for my grief. Others' mileage may vary. Others should just have walked away. --- This is my signature. It exists to keep people from skipping the last line of my posts. ... Copied to Clipboard!
