So why are games set in the future like Mass Effect, Halo, Starfield, etc. so in love with capitalism? These worlds extrapolate the shitty present into what should be a hopeful and wondrous future. We need more sci-fi games set in futures like Star Trek, the Orville, or the Culture.

Writing things that actually require that you give a crap is hard. Hence right-winger copouts represent the overwhelming amount of economic/governmental types in games.

Because otherwise, every Sci Fi game would be as bleak as the Cyberpunk universe. It's more realistic, but also more depressing

Halo doesn't do capitalism? Or even mention it.
Mass Effect has the Star Trek Ferengi ripoffs, but that's it; the other races have their own form of government and Humans seem to be under the US banner (lol). But then doesn't really focus on groups of people much nor their form of government and economy....

Guess the TC was bored and randomly thought of stuff that doesn't pertain much to the listed examples.

I never got the impression that Mass Effect was in love with capitalism, the series frequently highlights all the fucked up stuff spacefaring corporations are doing on other planets

what
Well in the opening post, TC basically says that even though present day corporations are shitty, games present future civilization as cheerful and bright. Which I do see that a bit in cities like New Atlantis in Starfield.

So to me, the opposite of that would be world's like Cyberpunk where corporate corruption and control is very open and obvious.

Because capitalism is an unfair system that creates conflict. It is easier to build an interesting world with inherit conflict in it compared to something more utopian.

Ah see I took TC's post as wanting futuristic sci-fi games that don't use capitalist societies so I thought you were implying Cyberpunk wasn't capitalist

Maybe Halo does not explicitly mention capitalism, I was thinking mostly Mass Effect and Starfield to be honest. Basically I think we should bring back post-capitalist sci-fi.

Video games need some sort of conflict, that's pretty much the whole point of them is to combat some sort of challenge for the player. A video game where you're just running around a perfect utopia without any major concerns would be pretty boring.

I can't imagine Halo having anything other than a WW2 style wartime economy where the entirety of society revolves around supporting the war effort. It might be some kind of state capitalism, but there has to be a degree of central planning with corporations subservient to the government because of the scale and stakes of the conflict humanity is engaged in.

There's no such thing as a fair system irl, let alone one that would outperform capitalist ones, thrive and not totally collapse within a lifetime.

They could make it so humans are near utopian, to give a sense of hope, but have conflict be between interactions between humans and other races with different systems.

Ironically, the reason we got utopian is because we had to come together to fight something else. The moment we win, it's back to infighting.
