Nobody knows who the fucking fish in finding Nemo is and that movie did fine.

Sometimes bringing in good character actors can be a breath of fresh air. I'm reminded of stuff like Howl's Moving Castle, where Emily Mortimer and Jean Simmons give this really understated and gentle performance to the role of Sophie that you wouldn't get from a traditional voice actor.

But yeah, bringing in a "star" actor to do voice work makes me a bit trepid about the quality of the work.

While I don't outright disagree with you as some named actors are just poor in voice acting roles some of my absolute favorite roles are things like Mike Myers as Shrek (and Eddie Murphy as Donkey) , Jack Black was absolutely awesome as Po and Kung Fu Panda as a whole did a great job with some Dustin Hoffman as Master Shifu and James Hong as Mr Ping and Ian McShane as Tai Lung.

Then they might have not been huge roles but you had very iconic voices like James Earl Jones being Mufasa in Lion King. The list goes on and on for me. There have been a lot of great voice acting roles from actors.

I don't mind it personally, idk how the Mario movie got so much flack for not having VAs that speak in adlibs

But I do understand how others bring up that having big name actors takes jobs away from voice actors and sometimes the big names don't put much effort in at all

It's not about the quality of the voice acting. It's the cost/benefit of hiring a star when nobody sees animated shit bc of the VAs. Pay a normal voice actor a normal wage instead of millions to Justin Timberlake

In the modern era Shrek pretty much hit a homerun with their cast. There is a reason so many other studios have and still do follow suit. It obviously works, and it works better than just using voice actors that the majority of the general public wouldn't know. If the studios knew they could use much cheaper voice actors and have the same appeal and success they would.

And you're underestimating how greedy they are about their bottom line and if they had the chance to pay some voice actors thousands vs actors millions they would do it in a heartbeat. Do you really think every single "suit" in charge of every single studio across the board is inept or maybe, just maybe they have shown repeatedly it is better to pay established actors?

The thing is? Typically the actors that are actually good at voice acting actually have voice acting training or stage acting training. What's really needed is avoiding actors who only have screen acting training.
