Robert Wayne Lee, 40, would pose as a 15-year-old girl online to lure out and expose suspected pedophiles, the Oakland County sheriffs office said in a news release. He published videos of his exploits to over 11,000 followers on Facebook and over 45,000 followers on Instagram. Some of those videos appear to show him engaging in violent confrontations with alleged predators. Lee confronted two teenagers Friday night a 17- and 18-year-old at a restaurant in Pontiac. We have "stand your ground" laws in many states, including Michigan, that allow to use force (without obligation to retreat first) when you are threatened, which can go up to lethal force sometimes. Courts can consider fists lethal weapons since you can absolutely kill someone with say a blow to the head or a rib puncturing. The gun thing is harder. Lots of state specific stuff. Apparently in Michigan the statute says a 17 year old can't carry a gun "unless with the direct supervision of someone 18 or older" and the threshold of supervision isn't directly defined (though there is probably case law). Like, you can't even say his heart was maybe in the right place if what he was doing was essentially making content for social media. Police don't even like working with or even acknowledging the better vigilantes of this type because they make actual police work harder and are often wrong. For me personally, unless there are a ton of damning details being omitted from this story, I think I would have trouble convicting either of these teens if I were on a jury. You are a teenager, think you are meeting another teenager your own age, and then some 40 year old guy shows up, yells that you are a pervert, is filming you, and then punches you? Yeah, no.
