The two main perks are no ads and the ability to play videos with the screen off on mobile

Since I don't use my phone for Youtube browsing and prefer to do more stuff like reading when I'm on the train or bus, the second reason means nothing.

Sites have no one to blame but themselves. They fucked around and found out, especially with ads on mobile pages with ads that cover half the page, autoplay ad videos with audio, and malicious redirects.

I didn't use an ad blocker on this site in order to support it until fandom cranked the ads up to 11 with incredibly intrusive full screen ads on mobile. There's a certain level of ads I'll accept, once you go past the threshold? Blocking time.
What blocker are you using, because yeah, it's fucking unbearable at this point.

If you go to UBO settings > Filter lists > clear cache, update filters, apply, then install Privacy Badger and Ghostery, it shouldnt bother you, at least for now.
I did all that, minus Ghostery, and its still whining at me.

Speaking specifically about Youtube, the advertisements used to be far less intrusive, and people still used ad block to avoid them. The more intrusive experience that exists now is the result of less intrusive means being bypassed, which just shows there is no level of advertisement, even a far lesser one, that people aren't going to subvert. It is a snake eating its own tail.

To be clear, in 2022 Google made nearly 225 BILLION in ad revenue. So unless Google is aiming to make a trillion dollars on ads, I don't know what argument can really be made for "we're legally not liable for serving you malware, and we make hundreds of billions a year already just on serving ads, but we're still going to go after the segment blocking ads by making it unbelievably hostile for the majority of the market not blocking ads because fuck you that's why."

They used to run like 5 second skippable ads. A minority of people couldn't cope with that, now this is the shit everyone has to deal with. I hope they just take this shit to a streaming type subscription only model, then the only people that have to worry about Youtube making money are the ones signing up for it.

Maybe these sites shouldn't advertise frauds, that lies about their products. However they don't take action on them, so people should be allowed to use Ad Blocker.

They should stop targeting people using Ad Blocker and figure out why people use Ad Blocker and target those frauds, that don't stop lying about their product.

That would require actual effort, not to mention admissions of bad practices, on the part of rich people. Why do that when you can just try to annoy boomer Karen whose son just installed ABP?

If online ads had better quality control, then it wouldn't be so much of an issue.
As for gamefaqs, I dont know if this still happens, but I remember the website here used to load so much slower without an ad blocker

Not an answer. Companies now make money off of people at every possible turn, if we're being honest we probably work more for them now then we did back in the days of indentured servitude, and we do it for free.

Giving companies money every single month to be allowed to do what we please as they profit off us anyway is some fucked up shit. May as well just bring the company towns back. Lucky we've moved past work being back breaking labor.

Once upon a time I unblocked ads for sites I liked. I didn't mind doing this, even if many an ad was an obvious scam, caused the page to load slowly, played audio, or displayed overtly offensive or sexual content.

And then I saw an announcement notifying everyone that an attack hacked an entire ad hosting platform and injected some JavaScript that was serving drive-by downloads of a rootkit. At that point it primarily became a security issue for me and it's now a matter of I'm not putting my PC at risk.
