The Japanese consider anime a style, not a reference of origin, and that makes more sense to me than what seems like an arbitrary distinction of origin.

If you think anime is more of a style thing, maybe.

Anime is just what the Japanese call cartoons in general, whether they were produced in Japan or not. Therefore, the Japanese need to use different wording tondistinguish between domestically-produced Japanese cartoons and cartoons from the rest of the world.

But to us non-Japanese folks, "anime" refers specifically to Japanese-produced cartoons from Japan (also known as "Japanimation"), regardless of whether they have that distinctive anime look or not

While taking obvious cues in its art style, serialization and overall aesthetic from Japanese cartoons (aka anime or Japanimation) in general, Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend of Aang cannot actually be considered an anime, purely because it was primarily produced in the United States.

Ironically, ATLA/ATLoA isn't even that popular or well-known in Japan!

When referring to art, which "cartoons and anime" most definitely are, we refer to styles, for example "in the style of Impressionists", for art produced after that art-era has ended.

Therefore Avatar is an American-made "Anime-style" production.

I think its only really worth debating whether something has an anime "style" to it, and I think Avatar does (Kind of like Teen Titans, it is somewhere between looking like Western Animation and Japanese animation), and in Korra it is even more prominent.

Like, debating about the word itself isn't interesting. If anime just means, "animation from Japan" or "all animation", that isn't an interesting thing to talk about, and it isn't even particularly useful either (The first being worthless especially when so much Japanese animation... is outsourced to places like South Korea). When people say something looks like anime, they are saying it has influences from Japanese animation in the way it looks.
