Hahahahahahha.

They have no one.

At least the Dems are unified behind Jeffries.

And he's the best the modern GOP has to offer.

If they don't want Jefferies they could make a deal with democrats on a compromise candidate. They won't do that though as that would be political suicide for any republican.

The dems should absolutely, under no circumstances, compromise with the GOP on anyone other than a dem Speaker.

apparently jeffries signaled he would be willing to back a compromise candidate if the gop makes concessions. they would only need like 10 or so republicans but it would have to be an actual moderate and idk if there are 10+ republicans out of the 200+ they have in congress that would be willing to do the right thing to govern.

Apparently the MAGA hardliners want Gym Jordan or heavy concessions that would put the Speaker at their mercy.

This is no bueno, because the country and the world isn't going to wait for the GOP to get its shit together.

Kind of. The Speaker runs among the majority party on a certain way of doing things (there's strategic goals too, which usually dominate this process).

Usually, rules are not a big deal, standard parliamentary stuff. But McCarthy made heavy concessions to the minority MAGAs to get elected Speaker, and they (apparently) want future ones to do it also.

What's probably going to happen in the short term is McHenry is given temporary authority as speaker pro tempore to bring some legislation to a vote, like aid to Israel and a budget bill. Maybe a new speaker will be elected sometime next year.

It would be unwise to trust anyone especially with the new vacate rules. They'll end up in the same spot as McCarthy where they'll have no choice and work with Dems and we'll all be right back here again. Though I guess if the Dems are backing them the vote will never go through.

I was a political science major in college (with a minor in economics which is amusing because I know so very little about economics). I spent my high school and college years volunteering for political campaigns and being an officer for the College Democrats. My first job out of college was in politics.

All of this is to say that I have been a politics junkie for my entire adult life-I absolutely cannot believe the state the GOP finds itself in. This is leaving aside the bad policy and evil and corruption, which is a whole other discussion. One of two major parties is completely broken and incapable of governing. It is astounding.

Anyone paying attention to politics knew as early as the 90s that the GOP was actively radicalizing portions of the electorate with lies and incendiary rhetoric. Newt and Rush and Fox set out to attract a certain kind of base, and they did a ridiculously good job, to the detriment of the country. But that base is now so radical they cant appeal to anyone outside their cult in the country. As a result, they cant even do the most basic governing. Because the base they spent so many years convincing that Democrats were horrible enemies doesnt want governing-they want performative trolling.

Now our system that is supposed to be based on compromise is busted, and the party responsible cant even manage to pick a leader. All because they decided that they thought Rush and lies were a better way to cling to power than developing policies that people would actually vote for.

The state our government is in is horrible and also amazing. I never thought it could possibly get this bad, but the GOP has really done a number on all of us.

Came here to say the same about the GOP but I have an undergrad in Philosophy so I know the origins of governance, at least, philosophically. The modern GOP is a broken mess that cannot function or govern at all. It is astounding to me that anyone would actively vote for them and, frankly, it is an indictment of a certain portion of the electorate.

I find philosophy so interesting, and I should have majored in it, but I only got as far as reading The Cave and The Republic.

Basically Scalise would've needed to offer beyond McCarthy level concessions to the Freedom Caucus to get the votes, and just wasn't willing to do so.

The problem the GOP faces now is that most "normal" Republicans aren't going to want to tarnish their legacies with this career-suicidal job. McCarthy was an exception in that he plotted to take the position for years and was just too much of a glory hound not to. The standard Republican isn't up for it.

This heavily benefits a Jim Jordan type. MAGA is perfectly willing to just lie to get into power, because getting away with BS "makes you smart" in Trump land.
