Depending how empty and how far away, this can piss me off a lot.

Same reason I will pee in the stall next to you when there are other open stalls.

An isolated car is a break-in magnet.

I don't park right next to, but closer parking seems safer to me somehow.

Doesn't that depend on just where you're parking and why?

Such as, if you're going to the store and you parked in a space close to the store, so will everyone else. If you're parking out in the middle of nowhere that makes no sense for you or the other person.

If I'm on my car I park next to a van or a bigger vehicle to take advantage of the shade usually

Same, it feels like an invasion of personal space. There's nothing that can be done about it when it's crowded but otherwise, there's no need to be doing that.

Safety in numbers

Someone has to park next to your car at some point, why not them.

My friend feels the same way as tc, and I think it's a weird complaint.

They're bad drivers. They need a parked car to help them line up in their own spot

This. In emptier lots, people park closer together to make their car less of a target. Somebody breaking in to a car is less likely to do it to a car in a cluster with other cars, since the likelihood of somebody coming out to one of those cars and seeing them is higher, whereas people aren't as likely to pay attention to cars off on their own.

The latter. People don't pay attention to anything but their car and surrounding vehicles. Thus, when somebody is walking to their car, they're more likely to see somebody breaking in to a car near theirs, than they are a car off on its own. And when cars are parked together, the likelihood of somebody walking out to one of those cars is higher, since... More cars.

Statistics support this. People are more oblivious to things outside of their near surroundings, so thieves target lone cars.

I'm literally not. The ability to "hide" is negated by the fact that cars parked together obviously get more foot traffic than cars off on their own. When people are walking to and from their cars, they typically are not paying any attention whatsoever to cars parked off on their own. More cars = more pedestrian traffic, which makes ducking down to "hide" utterly useless. Thieves target cars with less pedestrian traffic.

Yeah, I'd rather park next to other ones instead of by itself alone, especially when I'm downtown. It definitely is for making it less conspicuous.

So they can chop off your catalytic converter.

Because I see a difference between these two scenerios. I park my car in a place where there are 3 open spaces to each side of me. I come out and all the spaces are full, I get it. I come out and the only other spot with a car is right next to my driver side door, I know that driver is an asshole.

I'll never understand it either. Annoys me to no end, but whatever.

If youre parked under the only shade in the area, Im parking there too.

Asshole is a strong term for someone parking their car next to you

It could also be that the person wanted to park where you're parked, so they decided to just park next you. That or they wanted to park far away, but there's safety in numbers, so they park near another car

, I just keep watching the movie. I think that's a bad example as my car isn't some extension of me. I'm in a store shopping. What my car is next to doesn't matter at all.

I mean, I think get why some of you might be annoyed, I just think the level of annoyance is weird .

It's unsocial behavior about personal space that some are trying to justify, which is fine I guess. And the argument makes more sense when someone is actually in your physical space. But your car and it's parking spot? Weird.

I just take the nearest open space. Isn't that kinda the most efficient way to share a parking lot. People are calling out the people parking next to others, but it's the nobody can park next to me people that think they're different than anyone else.

its mildly annoying but i dont think very hard about it. i always assumed they feel like if they are on their own there is a higher chance their car is going to get broken into or something

my personal parking lot pet peeve tbh is people who idle in the parking lot at night and keep their headlines on. its really obnoxious to be waiting for someone parked across from a guy who is just sitting there blasting you in the face with light for 10 minutes like hes going somewhere
