One last state left to tally up (my own) but the result so far is about ~41% YES 59% NO, so at this point its a done deal.

Another win for racism and misinformation campaigns I guess.

The referendum was about forming an advisory body to represent the Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders in parliament.

The Vote No movement lied about this and claimed it would give this body executive power over the majority. This is easily fact-checked by reading the legislation itself (the body is not binding and the government and courts can choose to ignore it at will), but of course racist fearmongers love their alternative facts.

Democracy. Its own worst enemy.

so the Indigenous groups would have more of a say in government, but not actually be running it?

Pretty much. Im sure theres more nuance to it than that but the official Vote No pamphlet is full of misinformation, to the point a newspaper actually published a guide to it.

I mean our same-sex marriage referendum was disappointingly close, so the Australian people do have a long way to go. We have our issues with boomers clinging to relevance too.
