Jfc, heating oil is absurdly expensive this year. Just topped off my tank and it was 5.31 a gallon.

Thank Christ I managed to get a couple cords of firewood ready this year or it would have been over 6k and my house would never get above 59 :(

Heating oil is basically diesel, and the same hippie shit that bloats the price of diesel bloats the price of heating oil.

You might save some money buying the dyed "farm only" diesel, right from the gas station, but not much.

Have you thought of checking all the insulation and possibly investing in spray foam? Could save a lot in the long run.

I've mulled over it but haven't done any research. My water lines aren't pvc piping, they are... well I'm not sure, kinda looks/feels like a transparent garden hose. Not sure if foam will adhere to it. I have considered getting heat tape but electricity up here is also expensive, haven't crunched any numbers to see if it would be cost saving.

Edit: oh misread this, you meant the actual house insulation, yeah no idea

I have doubled panes windows but I'm going to get them all replaced next year, they all have a broken seal somewhere and moisture got in between the panes so they are done for. I'm sure that will help a lot for next year, too late/exspenive to do them now.

The attached garage is the worst offender, I don't know how to seal it up any better though and I HAVE to keep it warm because the pipes from the well enter there and then go back under into the crawlspace under the house.

If you use the kits on the broken seal or leaky windows it makes a pretty big difference. The kits are like $10 anyway and pretty easy to apply.

Can also just walk around your house and find cold spots, see if you can find any flowing air and caulk the holes.

I'll check them out then, thanks for the tip!

Nani the fuck, that is all a furnace costs for you? I have an ancient furnace that I'm going to replace at some point with a new one that will let me continue burning oil or natural gas when it becomes available (future proofing) and it will be about 12k which is the standard price in the area.

It isn't s fancy boiler either, my house is only 1650 square feet.

Yeah I had a quote in the 8k range but we found someone who did it for 5k. Mind you this was in 2020. It was a new hvac company that was trying to build up their reputation. Its 95% efficiency. Not top of the line at all but better than the ancient ash monster we had.
