A Street Fighter II style game featuring monsters and the undead? That's an awesome concept for a game.

Is it the obvious fan service of cat and bat boobs that held it back? It's kind of hard to argue that you're playing this one for the gameplay or the love of otherworldly monster characters.

The waifus are the only thing people even remember about these games

I think it was held back by a lot of things. First and foremost, I didn't even know it was a game made by a major studio until I saw this topic and looked it up to find out some info about it.

I always assumed it was some kind of indie meme game from Newgrounds, or something. So, among its shortcomings I would list "poor marketing"

All fighting games that aren't Street Fighter, Tekken, or Mortal Kombat are indie meme games.

Dark Stalkers was ahead of its time. If it came out any time in the past 5 years it'd have people simping like wild.

Chun-Li is sexy, but it's almost incidental. Felicia is just in your face with being literally naked aside from a selective fur bikini. And Morrigan is falling out of her top.

I remember these characters from Pocket Fighters

Street Fighter took the wind out of its sails.

I do not have a problem with waifus. I love da boobage.

But I understand it being a little embarrassing to have it known that you're playing games where women with impossible figures wear little or nothing.

They'd be better off folding it into Street Fighter like they did with Final Fight.

Even the Chinese vampire has a boob window.

Obviously the games were just too basic, so an American cartoon had to be made to show just how awesome it really is.

Who won, Tifa or Samus?

It didn't do enough to differentiate itself as a game in the time that it existed. Darkstalkers came out in that era where there were like a hundred fighting games coming out every year and while the characters have absolutely persisted, if I'm being completely blunt the gameplay really didn't do anything special and I think it got lost in the noise.

And then modern capcom screwed up any chance of a revival by doing it in that weird era where they were looking at things like pre-orders of compilation titles as a metric for whether a new game should be made or not.

I'm pretty sure it also made the magic series combo system. Or maybe it was reverse beat? I don't remember off the top of my head.

If it didn't make it, it definitely helped popularize it.

I don't think waifus had any adverse effect on the success of Darkstalkers. It was just a casualty of the Fighting game rush of the 90's of which only very few remain active today.

I agree that if Darkstalkers came out today, and was properly marketed, it'd do a heckuva lot better. It was just unfortunate to come out in a time there was a glut of fighting games and only the super popular like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat survived.

Not really what held it back was the death of the arcade scene, the over saturation of fighting games in the late 90s/early 2000s that hit a lot of fighting games(especially 2d ones) and Capcom hinging its willingness to make a sequel on a Hd collection of all the old ones that no one knew was the decider on it getting a sequel

Morrigan and Felicia are still massively popular characters
