On the screen?

I'm specifically thinking of one of the Megaman games where birds drop beehives, and then there are like 20 different instances of tiny bees chasing you around. >_>

But what other instances spring to mind?

in mario bros 2 there was a level with multiple platforms at different heights. Each platform had an enemy or two, and theyd throw eggs at you or whatever. If you would jump around eventually there would be too much going on and flicker and slowdown would take place

I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.

Playing Perfect Dark (N64) multiplayer with maximum sims and power weapons was a literal slideshow; and for some reason I loved it.

Goldeneye also. Looking at the ground makes the game run like 2x faster.

MM3 is the most notable one to me. The speedruns have a bunch of lag reduction strats worked in.

Games have always had FPS drops, yet people didnt complain back then. But god forbid a game today drop from 60 to 58, cause it sucks and they get dizzy.

Right? It never felt like a problem and instead was more like "YEAH, THIS IS AWESOME!"

Some of those games like Ghouls n Ghosts (Ghosts n Goblins?) relied on that slowdown to get through some of the more challenging areas. Of course with patches they became much harder lol.

Not quite the same, but recently played FO3 and NV on PS3. Game feels the need to update single change to the game world, eventually making the game unplayable. Walk into a room and hit a few cans on the floor? File size got bigger because it will forever remember the new location of those cans. And forget about using an energy weapon. Dead bodies eventually despawn (outdoors) but an enemy disintegrated to ash is a new object in the world forever.

The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.

Star Fox 64. Especially the Train level when you hit all the switches and the depot was blowing up like crazy. You dont see that if you emulate it but it did that on the original 64

Way back to Space Invaders: The gameplay speeds up as you destroy enemies not because of any clever timing logic, but because that poor 8080 could render frames faster as they disappeared.

Yeah it was epic. It's how you knew the devs really cared and crammed their vision in.

That staircase fight in NG2, that was neutered to a few enemies in Sigma 2. Apparently it runs fine on Xbox SX.

Gradius III on SNES is a standout example in my memory. It was actually something that really helped with player survival, as some people found out the hard way in rereleases on more powerful hardware, which actually included a on/off toggle in the settings to emulate the slowdown effect the original had.

The slowdown was far better if you played your PS2 disc on a PS3. Although the spider boss still had some slowdown.

Nearly any raid from Vanilla WoW. I remember the first 3 bosses of BWL being absolute hell with frame drops/lag.
