God tier soundtrack, time travel story but without any plot destroying paradoxes, somewhat unique and engaging combat system, and the story, specifically the true ending is probably one of the best I've ever seen in a video game.

If you're playing perfect chronology I recommend ignoring all the red chronicle shit. Just pretend it doesn't exist. If you're playing the original then just have fun and make sure you unlock all the nodes to get the true ending.

It's one of the best stories I've ever experienced with an incredible ending (especially the DS game; the 3DS kind of ruins it a bit in my opinion w/ the added content that mucks w/ the amazing original ending and even introduces contradictory or impossible time line stuff)

The soundtrack, while short for a JRPG, is utterly beautiful, every single track is great.

The cast is really strong, both the party and the antagonists/villains

Battle system is a fun tweak on traditional turn-based combat, where you can risk delaying your turns (thus letting the enemy attack you more up front) to get a long string of them together for combos to group the enemies together and hit all of them for more damage and post-combat xp/money rewards.

Here, just watch this. It's a short intro for the original DS game, covers everything pretty well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFFPfgujnGw

Perfect Chrolonology (3DS remaster) added voice acting and it's actually pretty good. But it also made a lot of changes I didn't like, including unwelcome additions to the story. I honestly recommend the original b/c I think the 3DS version did more harm than good. Like... it's a 9/10 instead of 10/10...if you can't get the DS version w/o paying an obscene amount then 3DS is good enough, but...

I say this as a huge fan that owns both versions.

If he plays the 3DS version, he should play "Perfect" mode (as opposed to "append" mode; where all the new content isn't available till you beat the game) and do it as it comes up. Because unfortunately the 3DS game re-balanced everything (nerfed) such that you get way less money and the equipment is crappier. So you actually need to at least do the Vault of Time to periodically get gear from there.
But the red chronicle stuff (basically the new story content) is based on the expected level you are when you can unlock it, so it's also kind of lame if you wait till end game to do it all. I guess it could wait, but...if you're going to do it anyway, I don't see why.

Thanks for the detailed response
If the added content is bad, then shouldnt i play the append mode and just skip that stuff?

It's not "bad" necessarily, it just...changes the original story or contradicts it in ways.... I can't go into specifics, so it's hard to explain. That's my opinion, some people apparently liked the new story content.
If you have any intention of playing the new content at all, the game was balanced around experiencing it periodically (the early stuff will be a total joke end game, and give you equipment that would be useful early on but useless late game, basically). So you should just do Perfect mode.
I'm also not sure if you can go to Vault of Time (basically just a place to fight stuff and get rewards) before end game if you do Append Mode, and I can't imagine how grindy things would get w/o access to that gear (b/c again, the 3DS version nerfed the legacy equipment stats and the money enemies drop to buy said equipment).
I guess Vault of Time is the biggest issue. If Append Mode doesn't stop you from going there, I guess it's not so bad. I just remember when Perfect Chronology released, everyone was warning, "don't do Append Mode!"

I can't recall which is which but while the 3DS did rebalance everything to need more grinding you can just play on the easy difficulty to offset it.

As for the added content for story purposes it fixes problems that didn't need fixing. I thought the parallel histories were cool, esp the stuff with Noah, but it gives a third ending to the main game which is the problem.

They're not accessible anymore but the DLC quests were pretty cool. The boss rush quest was really hard.

The DS version is fine. I didn't feel the need to get the 3DS version (I mean, I did play the DS version on the 3DS when there wasn't even a 3DS version)

From what I heard the 3DS version isn't really worth it if you have the DS version. But really, at this point get whichever one is more readily available at a good price.

Yeah, voice acting was one of the good additions in the 3DS versions. I was fine w/o it, but they did a good job. Only thing that I didn't like w/ it was they gave the unnamed NPCs a grunt-like response instead of voicing their lines, and I'd honestly rather just have silence than hear the same grunts over and over. "Huh?" "Yeah!" "Uhh..."

Did you do Perfect or Append mode?
