I've never played Undertale. Is it really as good as people say?

No

It's pretty good. Play it and see if you like it. Some people adore it, some people bounce off.

It's worth at least one play through.

I liked it a lot. But it's still a small indie game at the end of the day; charming dialogue, impressive attention to detail and a gimmick that at the time was newer with the routes.. it's good at what it does well and I feel going for the good ending gives you some unique gameplay. But it's a small game that still has cute but not impressive graphics, there aren't that many areas etc; it's not a huge massive triple a game. In some ways maybe this is a good thing, but I think the game is better when you go in with an open mind and let it do it's thing than have possibly unrealistic expectations from how big a hit it was.

Also I'd say it's worth two playthroughs since there's stuff you can only do the second time >_> Although I played it like four times.

Well worth a playthrough if you're interested. If you do play it, try to go in with as few assumptions or spoilers as you can.

It's probably somewhere in my top 10, certainly top 20.

I only really know of Alphonse, Papyrus and Sans.

Its very good but its not for everyone

its different from other RPGs.
during the enemies turn, you play a schmup minigame to dodge enemy attacks. they are pretty much all unique
during your turn you dont have to fight, you can do a variety of actions depending on the enemy etc to resolve the fight peacefully, there's a lot of personality to it.

Genuinely great game.

People just love to hate on it cause it's popular and the fanbase is annoyingly over the top.

If you even have a small interest in it, play it for yourself.

It's pretty decent! Kinda cute and goofy, nice music, novel gameplay that ties into the plot. It was worth the few bucks + hours I spent on it~

But if you're unsure, you could try Deltarune instead. The first couple chapters are free, and it's basically the same kind of thing Undertale is but more. It's kind of a...sidequel? A lot of the same characters, but a different universe and - so far - the two plots are unrelated. It's full of references if you have played Undertale, but it has its own story, and doesn't spoil anything I know of about Undertale's~

There's a lot of stuff it takes for granted that you know because you've played Undertale first.

I do not agree with the RE4 comparison at all XD

Almost literally every Undertale character is represented in Deltarune and the entire Universe and plot plays off the established lore, astmosphere and gameplay of Undertale. It's literally part of the mystery.

Even saying "It's like playing Seperate Ways before RE4" doesn't work.

Still not perfect but I'd argue it's more like Watching DBZA without ever having watched DBZ. Sure some jokes might still land but that's not the intended experience at all and you'll miss the context for over half of what's going on.

Anyone who enjoyed Undertale should try Everhood.

Eh, I disagree. And since I think taking that discussion any further will turn into a spoiler fest for both games, I'm gonna spoiler tag my post for TC's sake~

From what we've seen of Deltarune so far, any connection to Undertale is just a fun reference for those who've played Undertale. It's mostly the same characters, but with different backgrounds and roles. If you've played Undertale, then, for example, the estrangement between Toriel and Asgore is a cute nod. But even if you haven't, it's still its own perfectly coherent backstory for those two.

And when it comes to more substantial stuff, the two universes seem to be, so far, completely separate. Deltarune is its own universe with its own lore and rules, separate from Undertale's. For the moment, any connection between the two is basically speculation. I mean, I don't think it's impossible that they'll end up being more deeply entwined than they currently appear. It's just, well, that's the thing. They don't currently appear to be deeply entwined.

All that to say, I don't agree with the notion that it's necessary to have played Undertale in order to grasp Deltarune. You'll miss some references, notably the differences in the lives of the characters, but nothing fundamental to understanding the game. If anything, I feel like playing Deltarune first could be a good way to sell Undertale, by getting the player interested in seeing how things are different in the first game.

To be honest I suspect after the tutorial you'll know if the game is for you or not.

I can't imagine that many people were like "Man that tutorial section sucked so much but the game got good after it!" or "Man the tutorial was amazing but then the game fell apart." it's already shown its cards at that point

I think 20 mins in you'll know if you wanna keep playing or just Steam refund it.

It's not bad, but it's not really amazing. I think the fanbase ruined it. It's really hard to separate the two now.

Play Underrail instead.

It depends on who you talk to. But it's still a really good game.

Why don't you try it and decide for yourself? Or you can check out its sequel deltarune which has a demo to get a feel for how the gameplay works.

I personally found undertale boring.
