He's a toxic bro-child who has shitty takes on College Gameday, and has a radio show that features other toxic bro-childs like Aaron Rodgers. He's the sports version of Joe Rogan. I don't know anyone who likes him, and recent viewer polls show that the ESPN audience doesn't like him either.

So why has ESPN gone all in on this goon?

Because the Pat McAfee show is popular so they thought that it would be simple to just port him over to cable TV because they didn't learn their lesson the last fifty times people have tried to do that.

Define "popular". We see the worst of the worst sports people with "popular" shows (Colin Cowherd, Jim Rome, Skip Bayless, Mad Dog, etc.). Who listens to this garbage? It's all awful

Probably comes cheaper than a serious analyst. Cable TV is dying and they've made serious staffing cuts, yet have no less time to fill.

ESPN's decision to feature Pat McAfee and other personalities can be influenced by a variety of factors. It's essential to remember that media outlets aim to cater to a diverse audience, and this often involves including a range of personalities with different styles and viewpoints. Pat McAfee, like many other sports commentators, may have a following or appeal to a specific demographic that ESPN is trying to reach.

Opinions about sports commentators can vary widely, and what some viewers may dislike, others might appreciate. Ultimately, ESPN's goal is to engage a broad audience, and they make decisions based on a mix of market research, ratings, and audience feedback.

If you don't personally enjoy Pat McAfee's content, there are likely other sports commentators and programs that may align more with your preferences. ESPN typically provides a variety of content to cater to different tastes.

Not really. They completely ignore most markets. They want 18-44 year old white men.

I like him.

I only listen to his radio show tho. I don't watch epsn because it sucks

I also listen to mad dog radio all the time lol.

I like real sports news, I get that from the wire services and the local papers that cover my teams. I listen to these guys on the radio for fun and background noise.

It's not that they're "trying" to make him a thing.

It's that he's, unfortunately, already a thing, and they're following the money.

Remember when Doucebro McAfee had a "big announcement" that he hyped to the moon like two years ago? And it was that he was basically being paid tons of money to be sponsored by a sports gambling company?

That said all about him I ever needed to hear. Not to mention seeing his "fans" fall all over themselves praising him for that move...

....oh and the recent revelation that he literally pays millions of dollars for the Rogers interviews. So much for "journalism"....

They simultaneously put him on College Game Day AND syndicated his radio show AND have him in advertising.

He is incredibly popular and well liked. That makes them money. They like money.

He is also someone who pushes the popularity of gambling which is becoming incredibly popular among sports revenue now that betting websights are becoming the sponsors of these things. Which makes everyone more revenue. And they like seeing more revenue.

Yall just need to dig up the tapes and watch The Sports Reporters. I think that was the last real sports journalism regularly on TV.

Guys, sports talk is entertainment. ESPN, and I do think this is a shame, is just an entertainment network. All their shows are talking heads and basically every analyst is a washed up former player or the relative of a player there for name recognition and a dash of nepotism. ESPN is its own hype man because it makes money off selling drama and controversy because it gets you watching the games on its channels.

We all know this.

Real sports journalism exists. The AP has excellent sports writers. Your local papers do too. Defector has the best sports coverage on the internet imo for opinions AND journalism. You can go to these sources instead of the doggy, screamin' a, Skippy, or Pat.

I do.

I just like doggy because his meltdowns are funny and Pat is one of the few guys on national TV that care about my favorite college football team. You can like guys like this and real sports journalism too.

You don't have to like them either. I get why people don't.

I will confess though the gambling stuff makes me want to puke. It is ruining sports talk in general. No matter the host or channel. I recognize Pat hawks it and I hate it.

Yes, because he was already making them a shit ton of money, and so they put him in more places, to take further advantage of it.

They put him in those positions because he was already (again, unfortunately) popular, not because they were just hoping he'd be popular.

I'm well aware of why they do it but my qualm is that I don't find the clown shows entertaining, and that's like 70% of ESPN's programming these days and the ONLY daily programming that FS1 really sells at all.

I've been reading the sports page since I was 7 years old and probably will until I can't, but what I loved even more was insightful, poignant sports discussion on TV and that just doesn't exist anymore and what they've replaced it with is insulting to me.
