There have traditionally been some rather difficult Mario games. Even more recent ones often had some challenging optional levels. Mario Maker has some absolute nightmare levels. I don't think a 2D Mario needs to be easy per se.

What were you expecting?
I heard there were some challenges where you have to avoid picking up coins in one of the 2D games which were pretty demanding, but aside from that hasn't Mario been extremely easy for a really long time?

No Mario game has ever been "rather difficult". And generally, when the games do reach a "rather difficult" level, it's towards the end game.

This is right. I recall the optional content for New Super Mario Bros Wii being pretty difficult. And finding out that one of the stars you earn is dependent on having that assist mode thing never ever show in your playthrough. Which only show sup if you die one too many times in one stage. I was pretty mad finding that out after I had beaten the game.

Nintendo should start a sub series of Mario that is catered to people who want a challenge. Every game in that sub series would be really difficult and not meant for casual players
