Oh the good side, maybe we can work to not shut down the government. On the bad, it might happen anyways, and it was nice to not have the GQP damage America for a while, and instead damage themselves.

There's a decent chance Johnson is completely in over his head. He's the least experienced speaker since the 1880s and doesn't have relationships with McConnel, Schumer, and Biden and is going to need to quickly hire a bunch of new staff. He also is going to be expected to raise massive amounts of money for House Republicans, which he has zero experience doing. Nancy Pelosi would raise 100+ million annually.

No. McConnell and Democrats have basically overwhelming bipartisan support for combining Israel & Ukraine funding and Republicans know nobody really cares about Ukraine funding politically but they do care about Israel and Hamas.

Yup.

Hardest job in politics. Electing seem random guy that satisfies the rest of the republican house isn't enough. What actually matters is whether or not he can do the job.

But unfortunately this means we probably are in for an extended shutdown.

No, it isn't their fault. No, they shouldn't have to be the ones to take the initiative. Yes, even the "decent" Republicans are awful.

But...they and us are the ones that get fucked in the end, when they sit on the sidelines and let Republicans coalesce around someone all on their own, because w/ R's the crazy always wins.

I think they should have tried to work out a deal with Emmer but I dont understand the thinking that McCarthy was better than this new guy.

He already caved on the election interference stuff and was also going to cave on biden impeachment and the shutdown.

And he threw dems under the bus when they tried to work with him.

I'm not fucking blaming them. But the reality of the situation is that they voted against him. That is a fact. Republican dysfunction caused the vote and I get why they would vote against him. But one of the results of that is that somebody worse has eventually gotten the job. Now what that will actually mean remains to be seen.

Both are far-right by reasonable standards, but within the GOP McCarthy had multiple disagreements with the MAGA radicals that complicated his ascension and led to his downfall. Johnson has barely any of these differences, hence why not a single Freedom Caucus or MAGA guy has had a bad word to say about him and he cleared the vote with unanimous support.

It's like how on the outside looking in not a single Republican is gonna get the difference between Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, but a progressive could distinguish them.

Either way, it's gonna take nearly ever Republican to pass anything. So if the extremists want to put forth bill after bill that's not in line with the average American, let them, those swing district Republicans that helped flip the house at all will be long gone.

Even if Johnson wants to impeach Biden it's likely he couldn't get the votes for it. Republicans have a slim majority in the House and there are probably some Republicans in competitive districts, particularly ones who represent districts Biden won in 2020, who wouldn't vote to impeach.
