tl;dr theyre cutting off royalties to tracks with the lowest number of streams entirely through a new payment plan that the big labels agree to because theyll get paid more

Isn't the problem that the most profitable artists benefit the most from these centralizing policies? All the unknown artists could strike and have like no effect on the studios. So it's more like we need the most successful artists to advocate for everyone else, or consumers need to choose a more common-artist-friendly alternative to Spotify. Or am I wrong

Not really a surprise, unfortunately. Low-known assets aren't the ones driving subscriptions. Spotify has zero issue screwing the lesser-known artists if it means keeping their moneymakers happy.

Shouldn't surprise anyone at this point.

(Not saying I agree with it, it just shouldn't come as a surprise)

That sucks. There will be literally no difference between pirating non-mainstream music and streaming on Spotify.

Makes me glad I switched to Tidal. Should probably switch to Apple for my podcasts.

The people affected by this could all pull their music from Spotify and Spotify wouldn't get hurt one bit. The big artists who could hurt Spotify often don't own their own music and publishing employees aren't going to step up and defend artists that they don't work with. This is an area where government regulation would be more appropriate and effective.

The artists with the power generally dont give a fuck. See: socialist hero Bruce Springsteen letting Ticketmaster sell tickets to his shows for $3000 as long as he gets a cut

What you're looking for is copyright reform. Current copyrights don't benefit creators they only benefit the rights holder. Unions can't change that so long as it's literally the law that works created by contract belong to the contractor.

Most of the legacy artists, and a lot of current ones, sold their rights to song funds like Hipgnosis and Primary Wave.

They're only interested in maximising their investment.
