I don't know when the book was finished but that takes time and then adapting it takes time. They're never going to pass up an opportunity to tap back into a popular franchise and there's no such thing as too late. Just look at Avatar. It took Jim Cameron 35 years to finally make the sequel.

I thought the first one was kind of boring, but the second one was actually rather good. Then the third one was so boring I never saw number four.

They're fine. As far as book adaptions go they're pretty great. As far as "movie made based on YA fiction" goes they're way up there.

The MCU and franchise culture has poisoned peoples brains

What you've described, TC, is a very normal outcome for almost every series/trilogy

The Divergent series was so bad it basically killed the entire YA dystopia genre

why would it?

sci fantasy with an oppresive government isn't exactly a new idea

it's almost real life at this point

because for a brief moment in time it was very popular.

it would be different if it was just some niche thing.

Idk, there were quite a few that never got past the first book in their series. Divergent at least did well enough to get pretty far into it.

About as often as BttF at any rate

To be fair, Jennifer Lawrence carried the series and it would have flopped if a lesser actress was cast.
