I know his halycon years were behind him, but still.

Great actor, very funny, really talented, and the main character dynamic of Friends worked extremely well. He was also excellent in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which most people don't seem to know about. It was sad about addiction problems he had.

You know I'm not sure this is true

Loads of actors have a surprising breakthrough when they get older. Perry could have pulled a Hugh Laurie or Bob Odenkirk and after a career of comedy TV shows suddenly become the lead of a drama.
