terminator is fucking fantastic and a classic. really a stepping stone for what would be the ultimate action movie. but it didn't define the genre, it's still rustic and underdeveloped in some areas, and it still borders on niche. wasn't crafted for the general mass appeal.

terminator 2, however, takes that formula and actually makes it the ultimate action movie. hits every point. every scene is iconic. the writing, the acting, it's the basic blueprint that ever action movie strives to hit.

I think my issue with T2 has nothing to do with the actual movie but a mood thing. Like there are so many summer blockbuster style movies that get made these days that it lessened my current interest in T2. I still like it but T1 passed it maybe 10 years ago for me.

The art direction in T1 produced some iconic images and I really get a lot of enjoyment from the atmosphere. It's recently moved into my top 10 favorites.

I always liked T2 more until rewatching them recently. T2 has a few slow bits that really drag on, and a lot of the humor as well as the whole relationship between John and Arnie is really hokey. It's still got some of the greatest action of all time but outside of those scenes it's got some small issues. The first one is nearly flawless.

Exactly!

The Terminator is very much a product a time capsule of action movies in the 80s. But as others have said, it didn't DEFINE all others to come after.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is not only a time capsule of 90s action movies, but it REDEFINED what is possible with movies technology. Full stop.

It's better in virtually every way. Even the parts that should make it dated like the awkward scenes of Conor making the Terminator "Hip" still work because they are entertaining.

Everyone involved in T2 brought their A-game.

Fun fact: Arnold nearly broke his arm doing the one-arm flip shotgun reload in the highway chase scene.

Which makes the climactic scene even more impressive!

The real Sarah already has a busted right arm and has to reload the gun one handed! You need some dadgum strength to be able to do that, movie magic or not.

Every time she appears, even though I've seen the film dozens of times, I will NEVER get tired of the catharsis of that scene.

The prop gun that Arnie flips in the motorcycle scenes had to be specially modified with a larger lever loop so his fingers didn't mash together as the gun rotated. He almost broke his fingers because he accidentally tried the stunt with an unmodified one and a standard loop.

Terminator 2 is too long and I really don't give a fuck about dumb kid actor learning to love his toy robot.

Terminator (1) has a better visual aesthetic with the noir style and the stop motion robo skeleton. Sure, T2's action scenes are more elaborate and "betterer", but that doesn't translate to a more enjoyable full experience and T1's are also great. I like the young, gritty, grainy characters of Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor more than I can engage with crazy having seen the apocalypse Sarah Connor and dumb kid in the sequel.

I appreciate T2's advancement of CGI, and really, someone has to be the one to do it, but overall it creates a visual style that I like a lot less than the first one.
